He should contact the ANPE and the ASSEDIC. Around here it is always the ANPE first, but from what I can gather in other places it can be the other way round.

He will need to take the ASSEDIC form from his employer. It is usually a pastel colour, lemon or light green, (sorry can't remember which). Then if he is eligible for unemployment benefit will get an amount that will be based on the salary he earned and will be given for a period related to how long he has worked.

He must have that form for the ASSEDIC otherwise they will do nothing. I don't know whether they will want his Avis d'Impot sur le Revenu that he got last summer too, I would take it along just in case.

I believe that if everything has been properly declared then anyone having worked at least 4 months full time will be eligible for some unemployment benefit. It should be about 57% of the last (net) salary that was earned. It should last for about half the time that was worked. So, 7 months of work should give about 3.5 monhs of unemployment. All rough figures... subject to verification.

The documents necessary can be found on this link:

Hope that helps. Once the unemployment runs out, then he'll have to see a social worker to get the RMI (minimum insertion revenu). I don't know much about that one.

Hope that helps.

Stephen.

When you register as unemployed in France, you will be paid benefit, but unless you are a special case like a musician where different rules apply, you will also be offered up to three jobs, refuse them and they stop paying you benefit.

The correct figure is 960 hours of work completed are necessary for eligibility for Dole (payments) and Social Security (health care). One or more hours less and they will knock you back. Guaranteed.

I often wonder what happens to those people who can manage to get the that all important first job for what ever reason... Starvation I guess, so much for a Socialist State.

And the paper work must be there too. If the former employer doesn't do it properly or doesn't pass on the proper papers one may as well whistle. Nothing will be done and no money given.

Incidentally, the RMI is only for people over 25, under 25 and one may as well starve. So young people begging in the streets  may well be in need of anything they are given, (it isn't always these kids fault that they find themselves in this situation).

AB, Please don't shout!
