TrishT
Decided this year we are taking a long break and intend to drive to our holiday place near Nice as we've always flown before. The plan is to go down the west coast diverting in to the Loire Valley then to Biarritz, across the Pyrenees and on to our place for a few weeks before returning over the Alps and across the top part of France. We know the popular places to stop but is there anywhere untouristy that you think is a must see? We will have no real time restrictions and it would be a shame to miss out. letrangere
Think I could spend the rest of my life (OK, rest of the day) giving suggestions. Take us through that route again. You're doing Tours-Bordeaux-Biarritz and then cutting across the Pyrenees and skirting the Mediterranean and on to Nice? Do please give us some clues. What particularly interests you? What kind of place would you say merits a long diversion? M
Richard-R
Lourdes of the A64. It is so tacky, it almosts make a visit worth while. You can buy all manner of Chatholic goodies. From flashing Virin Mary's, to Cross that glow it the dark.Carcassonne is well worth a little detour of the coast road.
Ormx
When coming up along the med coast there's a beautiful island called Porquerolles (not too far from Hyeres/Toulon, I think, but you'll have to look it up). I found this a great escape from the busy coastal towns and from the traffic - there are no cars on the island, so you can rent bikes and cycle around it in about 2 hours I'd say (it took us all day as we had a baby in a trailer behind the bike!!). The boat across takes about 45 mins (again, it's been a few years so you'd better check that).Other than that the Gorges de Verdun, somewhere close to there.... ( my geography is crap!), you may have heard of them, the Grand Canyon of Europe, are breathtaking and don't seem to be well known. A fabulous drive. GRT17
Porquerolles, what a delightful island and it does bring back very happy memories for me however it is over 30 years since I was last there. I have heard that it has become very "popular" place so probably best avoided in the high season.Gill
Alcazar
I'd DEFINITELY avoid it in the high season if our experience of 6 years ago was owt to go byAlcazar
Teamedup
Personally I would avoid most of the south coast in mid summer, June or September would be much quieter, and for me much nicer, even the tourist places.
