Richard-R
This is a good story from the Telegraph about Brits buying in France. Sorry i'm not able to make it a line, but i'm sure one of you good people out there will fix that for me.http://telegraph.co.uk/property/main.jhtml;sessionid=M0FDOKMCZANRBQFIQMFSM5WAVCBQ0JVC?xml=/property/2005/02/26/pfrance26.xml&pos=portal_puff1&secureRefresh=true&_requestid=
househunter
Just type in " les rosbif" in your search engine and it will come up. There are 2 other articles related to this story, and the links are on the page. For those of us about to come over to find a new home, its very worrying, and suggests there is an underlying resentment against the Brits emerging.Has anyone experienced this?My French collegues in the UK say its a growing feeling.Househunter

Just the sort of rubbish you would expect from the Torygraph. There is no way that 9 families in a village can have any influence on house prices, besides which, the French (generally) are not interested in buying doer-uppers.But we have been through all this before, yet some (on both sides) still feel the need to berate the Brits, or the French for what is essentially a European economic issue. letrangere
The original émigrés came because they really loved France," she says. "Those that come now are here to take advantage of the better style of living and they don't mind whether it is France, Spain or Italy – they simply want a detached house with their own grounds."They come to France because they have seen it on a TV programme. And among them are those who don't want to become part of the French community. They grumble about the shops closing at lunchtime and having to stand in queue while the French talk about the niceties of the day. And not surprisingly, the French get resentful."Couldn't have put it better myself. Thanks for the link, it was an interesting article and a balanced one too. Tresco
At best I feel mildly amused by this sort of 'feature', at worst, really annoyed. Really, it may be fairly balanced, but it's pretty shoddy stuff. I love France, but I can't be the only person who took a while to adjust to shops not only shutting for 4 hours at lunchtime, but sometimes closed after I had been standing waiting for 10 minutes with a full trolley I wanted to buy. And yes I grumbled, so did the French people around me - a real 'community spirit' developed on one of these occasions, but it probably wasn't the way some envisage the way they will 'integrate' with the locals.Am I the only person here who thinks, 'yep, it's lovely to see staff chatting with pensioners in small shops, but could you carry on serving at the same time please?'. Don't get me started on the larger shops, where you often don't even get an apologetic 'look' while a member of staff continues their phone call at the till. tresco
Nick Trollope
There is, as it happens, an equally interesting article in last w/e's G2. Written by a reporter who actually visited Bourbriac, in a typically Grauniad style. Of course, it is completely at odds with the Torygraph's piece. As to why people move to France. I reckon it is to get away from the f****** Tory press (and the equally f****** New Labour press). France is a multi-cultural socialist state. Long may it remain so.Amen. Teejay
I briefly looked at the Telegraph report and fairly quickly dismissed it. Logically how can you have an estate agent complain about people who ONLY want to buy a big house and land and yet this same agent was only too happy to contribute to the report by Living France on the Charente Maritime? Don't recall any grumblings then.Focused more on the charms of the region and the rise in house prices in the last two or three years. This is the same agent that I would approach if I was selling. The same agent that has prospered on foreigners buying in their locality. I'm sorry but for me this doesn't add up. This looks more like a newspaper filling a space with a not too serious report.By the by, the most expensive house in our village was sold by The French to the French and the last two houses sold have been purchased by young French couples and the new builds all owned by, yes, you've got it....the French. France is a multi-cultural socialist state. Long may it remain so.>>I can't believe anyone would emigrate because of newspapers!! The national French papers are also dire, just in a different way. They're dull as ditchwater, full of big words and not enough pictures, and have about the lowest readership in the whole of Europe. They're generally regarded as being "in bed" with the Establishment, and the thought of being in bed with any of THAT lot is decidedly unappealing!!I agree that that Aussie bloke is a bit much, but I still wouldn't emigrate because of him.People move to get more hectares for their money, and to search for the mythical French "traditional way of life". Multi-cultural....... 2002, LePen was almost president...... maybe you should get out more!

Cjb
If he were the President, investment in the country would drop so sharply that we'd all be in the s**t (French, Brits etc......). Doesn't Le Pen support leaving the EU? That would result in you having to pack your bags too!!
letrangere
I can't believe anyone would emigrate because of newspapers!!Maybe. But on rare visits back, it still depresses me when I see 2' high piles of gutter press papers stacked up in newsagents in Britain. Re Brits in France themed stories, my favourite is the Sunset Times, which had the temerity to print the same article, almost identical word-for-word, about Riberac being over-run with British, in both the summer of 2002 and 2003!M

Cjb
Whatever you say. If you're convinced that such a man would give two hoots about your welfare, well I suppose that's up to you. I've no idea whatsoever, about why you and your wife came to France or the type of lifestyle you lead (can't see how one's smartness should be judged on this) as your posts seem to simply be intent on winding up others. An immigrant who supports an anti-immigration politician!!
