Voting day May 29th

Recommended Posts

President Chirac has decided then, May 29th for the European Constitution vote and for those of us who registered to vote here before Dec 31st last. Heard comments from locals in Rennes on Radio 5 lunchtime who had mixed views but all agreed that no info has been given to the french people to find out what exactly it means.

The lady in the voter registration office here guessed back in December that it would be May or June, so she was right. Her logic was that they would need until the end of april at least to print all the copies of the constitution they have to send to voters, and you just can't have any form of election/voting during the summer holidays.

Now I'm waiting for my carte d'electeur to arrive

I've heard several times on local radio an Government 'advert' about this subject with a phone number and I think website address to get more info. Sorry, don't know what the web address is...maybe a Google.fr search will come up with something.

I've just noticed on the calender that the 29th May is Fetes des Meres.

I presume, you have to vote locally where you live, so this would pose a problem for those who with to visit their mamans for the weekend, who live in a different part of France!

Are you sure that mothersday is on the 29th of May? In Switzerland it is on the 8th of May and I thought it was everywhere the same in Continental Europe?

No,  its Mothers Day 29 may in France.  France is not like England with families spread all over the country, so many rural French will walk to see their mothers on 29 may as the majority of families live together or near each other so voting will not be a problem.

The result could be though, as the French just love to vote against things

I've been trying to keep up with this mainly via BBC news online, as we havn't recieved anything at all here by way of public information through the post, yet, and I still find it hard to follow what few discussions I have caught on the TV/Radio.

I reckon France will vote yes to ratify, but only because there will be a separate vote on the issue of Turkish membership, at some point in the future, and despite the fact that elements of both the political right and left opposing ratification of the constitution as it stands.

It matters not if the french want or do not want turkey as a menber of the EU,like in the end it will not matter that the UK will vote NO(:rolleyes. The simple fact is that any country will be over ruled by what is fast becoming a superstate and a lame duck one at that.

OK i've waited a few days for others who may know more than me to respond and continue.

I admit I have disenfanchised myself at this point. I am not proud of this, but I am not ashamed, it's just what happened (for the first time in my adult life).

As for the vote in France, it matters in the short term, if nothing else. France's vote would be almost certainly be 'no' if the plebiscite on Turkish membership had  not been offered. As I understand it, this issue has been separated out because there was little chance of a 'yes' vote unless it was.

As far as I can make out, only the UK really stands any chance of voting 'no' to ratification.

Please can you explain your 'superstate'/'lameduck' point  outcast, or anyone who agrees (or disagrees). I'm not looking for major political insight here, really, just views.
