Iceni
Watching the very odd bits of UK TV, I can't help noticing the strange changes coming over actors and presenters I thought I knew well. Anne Robinson on Saturday night looked nothing like she has ever looked in her life and her lips suddenly owe a lot to Lesley Ash. Actresses and Actors who always said that they would never ever get a 'face lift' are all at it and there is even suggestions that the Americans start early, facial lifts starting in their thirties and calf implants in their teens. Now, do the French do this. I have watched a few French progs and noticed that elderly men look like elderly men, ladies of a certain age look like they have had one heck of a life. I have always fancied having the set of suitcases over and below my eyes removed - but hey, John loves me just the way I am, wrinkles and all. Has this knife attack caught on over here??????Actually, having had a few operations for good sound medical reasons, I don't think I could face that for just cosmetic reasons. Teamedup
Years and years ago there were often programs on about plastic surgery here, I have certainly seen many programs where 40 year olds were having lines removed, fleshiness around the eyes taken away, lips smoothed, they do it with something like cat gut, or used to. I must say that these people, men and women used to look knackered pre op and they would always say that the job market required them to look youthful. Pre botox it was always surgical in some way wasn't it. Botox makes people look odd. Maybe such stuff was on in the UK too in the 1980's but I didn't catch them when I was back.So I reckon that plastic surgery is something that is done here and has been for many years by many levels of society. Chrissie
I love playing "Spot the Botox". No expression at all from the eyebrows up. Where on earth will we get the "interesting" faces for character parts in future???Chrissie (81)
SaligoBay
I know what you mean, Iceni, it seems much more common "back there", but it does go on in la belle France too. It's generally called "un lifting".According to this: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3972660/ the 3 most common procedures in France are nose reshaping, liposuction, and eyelid surgery. And just across the border, what about old Berlusconi, proudly revealing his "inner youth". How smooth does he look! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3439801.stm
Mistral
We played the "whose eyebrows don't go up and down?" game while watching the cesars. It was quite revealing. There quite a few actresses (mainly) who were "un certain age" and who looked it but who still seemed to be strangely lacking in facial expressions. Georgina
I have actually noticed that some actresses are actually smiling on one side of their mouth as well. They look ridiculous. But I have seen quite a few now. I think Anne Robinson has always had this affliction so not as noticeable with her. Have you also noticed the ones who have botoxed their foreheads actually take all the hair away from their forehead so it looks a bit plastic? Weird. They're all doing it on tv even the local stations, they look like androids. But what about the feeling when it comes back again after a couple of months, it must be a shock when you wake up ugly again.Georgina
Val_2
I just wonder what this Botox stuff does to you in the long run especially as it a poison base to start with. Look at those poor fools who had silicone which leaked and spread all over their bodies killing them slowly. Why can't people accept growing old gracefully and those who just get their mugs done, what about the rest of the bod, they will look very odd one day with wrinkly saggy bits below the chin and unflawed perfect face features, sort of Whacko Jacko'ish. Washy
I blame this conversation on new wide screen enormous televisions! I do not watch much tv (yet) here and then only French tv on a tiny portable. I was in shock when I visited a friend and sat quite close to her widescreen digital tv. It made me jump to see tv personalities up so close and it such detail. Every line, patch of dry skin, wrinkle, tuck etc. is so visible. Frightening. Val_2
I put the TV on last night to see a programme and Anne Robinson was doing a show about outakes or something. Her "fixed" face was a shock after seeing her originally on Points of View years ago. In both our opinions, she should have left well alone as she dosn't look rea,in fact, quite scary.
