Useful short cuts in typing accented words

Recommended Posts

I don't know where else to post this as the FAQ section where the original information is posted does not accept replies(for obvious reasons).

Thanks very much for the information on short cuts to accented words - the only problem is I cannot get them to work either here in the forum or in 'Word'.

I must be doing something wrong clearly but I cannot work out what. Help please!

You have to use the numbers on the numeric keypad rather than those along the top row of the keyboard - and you must ensure 'Num Lock' or whatever it is called on your keyboard is on. Then it should work both in Word and on this forum.

The FAQ list all seems a lot of hard work to me....  If you are using Micro$oft Word and an English keyboard (if you are using a French one you don't need it!) a more 'intuitive' version is:

To insert

Press

à, è, ì, ò, ù
À, È, Ì, Ò, Ù

CTRL+` (ACCENT GRAVE), the letter

á, é, í, ó, ú, ý
Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú, Ý

CTRL+' (APOSTROPHE), the letter

â, ê, î, ô, û
Â, Ê, Î, Ô, Û

CTRL+SHIFT+^ (CARET), the letter

ã, ñ, õ
Ã, Ñ, Õ

CTRL+SHIFT+~ (TILDE), the letter

ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ
Ä, Ë, Ï, Ö, Ü, Ÿ

CTRL+SHIFT+: (COLON), the letter

å, Å

CTRL+SHIFT+@, a or A

æ, Æ
