We have twice stayed in gites in France, both run by french families. Both very comfortable . It didn't bother me one bit that we were helping to support them. We needed somewhere to stay and they provided the service. What are you getting at, outcast? Would it have been different if the hosts had been british? Pat.

'Do you holiday in france and if so what do you think of the postings about people living off the income from the money you pay for your hols ie the gites that you rent and that money keeping a float the hosts?' (outcast)

We needed somewhere to stay and they provided the service. What are you getting at, outcast?

I have to say Patf's question is the same as mine, but just for you, outcast, i'll add another imaginary question, to make it easy for ya! Let's use HGV licences as an example, as you are (I think) a fully paid up certified driver of heavy vehicles.

Do you (anyone except outcast) need something transporting anywhere, and if so, what do you think about people living off the income from the money that you pay them, for your furniture to be brought here, or anything moved anywhere, and that money keeping afloat the people who have the appropriate skills, equipment, and licences to do this?

Sorry everyone for being the one who bites at this, but maybe it will nip it in the spud.

I think all HGV drivers should automatically offer their services free of charge to us overworked, underpaid teachers. In fact better than that, this should be done during the summer holidays so that we're getting paid for not working whilst they have to work unpaid.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that Outcast's trying to get Miki to take the bait. What is it with him and teasing other men?? Me, Dicky, Miki...

Ummm, well you see it goes like this.

I stay in a CdH or gîte. I pay the owner some money to do this. The owner uses the money to buy food, pay taxes etc and stays alive until next year so that I can stay in a CdH or gîte and pay the owner some money - and it goes on a bit like that.

Not too complicated for you, was it?

Cjd,stick to telling little kids what to do and leave the adults to get on with itnothing to do with having a go at miki.

The point is that many tv progs show people who have bought houses farms etc with the intention of doing them up and letting them out as gites, not many progs show what the holiday makers think of them ie quality of gites, servive provided from people who have never run gites before, yeah the gite owners are provinding a sevice but the post is headed "do you holiday in france" for the hard of thought.Need a holiday myself now after all it`s hard work living in france, couple of days by the beach in the caravan should do it.

You would have to start another thread then, because this is not the question you asked originally

What did Miki say about digging a hole?

Careful at the beach outcast.

I can almost imagine outcast sitting at the beach now, flowery shorts, England football shirt, copy of The Sun in hand, asking where the nearest chippie is. That is what HGV drivers do isnt it?!

Oh sorry! Am I stereotyping!

Blah, blah, blah...

Am I to assume that you agree with offering your services for nothing to your beloved teacher friends?

Now go back to your place and stop teasing the others or there'll be no trip to the seaside for you!!

I was 100% with Outcast on this one up until the time I told the money grabbing cashier at Carrefour she had no right to grow fat at my expense.

Now what do I do with this pineapple as it is making walking difficult for me?

LOL, very good weeedon!

As for the comment on HGV drivers and the nearest chippie, no self-respecting HGV driver would do that. Not when a fry-up and a mug of tea or coffee can be had for a LOT less

Don`t know miki, off to the herault near adge(maybe, weather looked ok but may change)only an hour away, done all the local beaches fancied a bit of a change, you know how it is,wines cheaper but crap(in my opinion),fit for the masses up north.

Never buy the sun only buy the telegragh because it has such a wide appeal with hard working free market free thinking type folks and it take longer to read than the sun therefore better value for money, you know what us `vaner(ex yachties) are like with our dosh.

I will admit it was no "parrot sketch" but to simply post "boring" is a strange thing to do isn't it ? Or is it how one would look on the beach............"text speaking" drives me crackers!!

Miki - do you have an subconscious identity crisis?   I accept that you are a supporter of the blues but I am a tad confused - first of all your chosen image was of the sainted one dressed dans un maillot des fers, mais, a ce moment ci il est dans le maillot des juifs -  please explain?

Well spotted Creusois !

But surely, Jimmy is Jimmy in any shirt, even in Spurs or Hammers shirts. You can take the lad out of Chelsea but you can't take Chelsea out of the lad

I can put back the one of James in blue but he looks about 12 !!

Shame about the results last night, almost had me weeping

"not many progs show what the holiday makers think of them ie quality of gites, servive provided from people who have never run gites before"

A trillion apologies for interrupting this banter but several thousand posts back Outcast actually makes an interesting point, arguably for the first time ever.  No, you're right, they don't and they should.  But the papers pick up on this sort of thing.  In fact, in the Sunday broadsheets a few summers back there were a succession of scathing articles from the Polly Filler columnist brigade complaining about poor quality accommodation, naff old furniture, etc. in many gites today. And a quick scan of any of the websites proves their point.  My particular favourite is the woman with the small, exquisitely situated cottage right overlooking the upper Lot.  She has the nerve to charge £850 week in April (sleeps 4) yet only provides a plastic dining table and chairs for her guests to eat off.  The two seater sofa has what looks like a dog blanket thrown over and that's about it for furniture in the open plan living room with kitchen corner!  I sincerely hope she has other forms of income because I can't imagine she's going to make much out of this lark.  M

Skipping over the first bitI was watching some progs where the owners where still painting as the guests were arriving, moving furniture etc,as some one who never stays in gites wondered what people who stay in such place thought.

Cjb, where would you like to go.....distance no object, one way of course!

Deby....`truckers ` in france have a better taste, take it youve never visited a routier, some of them would give your gaffe a run for its money!
