Inflation

Recommended Posts

Inflation since the euro has been mentioned on the tv during this last week. And 6.5% was mentioned, which I think seems rather a lot. Maybe that is right, some things seem to have gone up rather a lot.

Does anyone know where I can find out what inflation really has been since the euro. I know that INSEE,  provide the govt stats. But I would rather like to see the facts as opposed to what the govt is dishing out. I rather take Insee with a pinch of salt.

Hello,

Well I remember when a can of coke purchased from one of those eateries (selling pizzas, sandwiches, pastries etc) would cost 10FF.  A few months after introduction of Euro the can of coke had increased to 2Euros.

Clearly not 6.5%!  I noticed this rounding trend in several stores/places but the coke one clearly sticks in my mind.

It is now very hard to get real figures for France and Germany. They have bent a few Euro laws to exclude certain items from the index to fudge there numbers for the rules governing the membership to the Euro. 6.5% seems fair to me. We've lived here 2 years and have noticed our living costs increasing. Many things seem to be up in cost by 10% over last year.

The only site that I could find that was independent was for consumer prices and this gives 2003 as 2%.

The Eurozone is supposed to be lower than the UK but as they use different measures and different items it is very difficult to work out the true situation. This site should at least use the same base figures.

The UK gives 3% for the same year http://www.indexmundi.com/g/g.aspx?c=uk&v=71

Think it depends what they have taken as the base date. Was it 2000 ? - if so 6.5% over 5 years = 1.3 % per year which feels too low.

I'm not sure how I'd use that info if I had it . . . or why I'd care that much.
