Chirac is now the most unpopular President of France since polls started being taken. His “approval rating” has now dropped to 26%. Villepin does not receive great approval either with 58% of people believing that he will not understand their problems and 74% believing he will not be able to resolve them (poll for Libération). However, he (de Villepin) does manage an “approval rating” of 41%. The current government is the most unpopular for 20 years and is considered to be a general rejection of the French “political elite” that people say has been growing over the last few years.

We live in interesting times ?

Don't know much about the rest of them, but I read somewhere (sorry, either The New York Times, the Turkish Times, or somewhere in between) this week that Sarkozy's popularity outstrips the rest of them by miles.

No surprise there, but he really is getting talked about in the most peculiar places.

LOL I was one for a while, but I think I'm getting better.   He's like a Duracell bunny, he keeps on going and going and going when other politicians are wilting.    And he has an uncanny ability to appear everywhere, north, south, east, west, I think he was in Perpignan last week getting his mug seen.   He is extremely ambitious, but is credited with doing something positive about "securité" and road safety.   Gives the impression of being worryingly Thatcherish, but at least he has some life about him, which Chirac hasn't.  Ever watched Chirac talking? 

And did you know that Dominique de Villepin does not come from a noble family?  I read it in Canard Enchainé, so it must be true.   More like "vil pain", allegedly.   So there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no admirer of "Black Jack", nor of M de Villepin. But an article in Libération is unlikely to show much approval for either! Its political position is somewhat to the left of Ken Livingston.

As you say, we live interesting times. I live near an interesting place, where the First Secretary of the socialists is Mayor and Deputé, and yet the County council has a right wing Majority, and Mrs Chirac has a seat in it. If Jolly Jack is a buffoon (though according to his friends, he's a very nice and personable gent) his lady wife is far from comic. No joke at all in fact.

Apparently Villepin has said that he is going to reform the country in a Napoleonic 100 days.

I wondered if he could even stand a chance of doing this, especially as the big summer holidays are coming up. But what a time to sneak things in, he may well do it. But what?
