Teamedup
If living around the Med was warm all the year round, why would those old romans have invented central heating? Edit:Now why did I do that, I do know how to spell mediterranean and I can't edit that bit
SaligoBay
1. it's NOT warm all year round!!!!2. They went to colder places than ye skanky Medde, maybe they invented CH oop Norf.....Roman Wall Blues, by W.H.AudenOver the heather the wet wind blows,I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose. The rain comes pattering out of the sky.I'm a Wall soldier, I don't know why.The mist creeps over the hard grey stone. My girl's in Tungria; I sleep alone.Aulus goes hanging around her place,I don't like his manners, I don't like his face.Piso's a Christian, he worships a fish; There'd be no kissing if he had his wish. She gave me a ring but I diced it away;I want my girl and I want my pay. When I'm a veteran with only one eyeI shall do nothing but look at the sky. Sadly he couldn't maintain any sort of order and so we didn't learn much. I think he lasted 1 term.
Philmco
JohnTo wander even further off thread, Benny Hill's brother tried to teach us English in the 50's, and he couldn't keep order either!
Teamedup
I did say 'If'. I know it isn't always warm from posters comments, yours included. I can't help thinking that Auden did not have the same sort of rain we had, that is if he ever visited The Wall. Pattering isn't quite the word I would use, more like 'battering' and it was almost horizontal. Housesteads must be on the most inhospitable bit of those lovely borders.
