Buying Plants in France

Recommended Posts

Is it me or is there a distinct lack of garden centres in France!

I have hunted for nurseries to stock my newly acquired garden but have only found very small Point Verts which stock very little. We live on the Lot/Aveyron borders and asked our French neighbours where there was a good stockist with plenty of choice and they struggled and eventually suggested a garden centre two hours drive away.

Is this typical? Gardens do have shrubs and plants etc so where does one go to buy them or is the tendancy in France to buy by mail order?

If anyone can advise me where I am going wrong I would be very grateful or any suggestions of where I can go to buy my much needed shrubs I would be very grateful.

Many thanks

Sharon

I felt the same as you when I first came here. Then when I got the chance to look around and know the area better I found that there were quite a number of garden centres not too far away and there are also quite a number of nurseries, often open to the public. Since I have been here we have also had several brand new garden centres open up and these are very similar to the UK versions (although, regretably they have not latched on to the fact that looking at plants is thirsty work and a Salon de Thé would go down well )

I found out about a number of out of the way places by visiting plant fairs which are normally held in the Spring or early summer so it is getting a bit late now. You get a lot of specialist growers and it is well worth keeping an eye on the local paper or tourist office for dates.

I don't know if I am just fortunate that this area is very much concerned with growing things, but I have also noticed a fair number of garden centres in my travels around France. You may find them smaller than you are used to and they do seem to be even more seasonal than the UK outlets, so I would say that for next 2 months don't waste your time, but they are there. Try again in the Autumn.
