Will
Things are never quite what they seem in the drinks business. It works the other way round too. Some of the most prestigious names in Bordeaux have been foreign owned for years. I always try to drink Powers whiskey in Ireland, because it's about the only widely-available brand that isn't owned by Ricard.Still, there is a calvados distillery just a short distance away from us that was owned by Guinness for many years (though it's independent now). One of the big UK drinks companies has offices in the same town as our English maison secondaire. It owns the Mumm and Perrier Jouet champagne brands, as well as Courvoisier cognac.

letrangere
SB, this is marvellous. It's too complicated to paraphrase accurately but the leader in this week's Spectator, after initially saluting Chirac's willingness to speak from the heart, goes on to urge readers to boycott all French products as a stand against the CAP and France's to the death support of it. It argues why buy "overpriced Chablis when there are good, unsubsidised New Zealand whites on the market for a fiver a bottle?" Wonder how many of those committed anti-French (and I'm afraid to say I know a few) fully realise what they're buying by way of alternative? Chas
Laphroaig and Bowmore are fortunately both available in our neck of the woods with occasional supplies of Lagavulin in the specialist booze shop. Selfish perhaps but so long as I can buy them I am not too worried who owns them. I think tracing lots of products back to "owner" companies can throw up some surprises
Richard-R
Ownership is not a black and white issue any more (if it ever was). We own shares in companies in the U.S.A. U.K. France etc. So that makes these businesses part own by a British person. Your pension fund owns vast amounts of shares in lots of different global markets, ergo so you own a part of a non-British based company. I would say that only a company with more than 75% of it's shares owned by citizens of a single country can say that it is a French, Spanishr or U.K. etc business.
