Bannon
Read the chicken book (as you do being new to them) and this one not answered..... so over to you chicken keepers.Mrs Hen number one has had her chicks and is happy scratching around the run followed close by her new brood. Dad has now been excluded from the run (as advised by the chicken book) and has his own hutch in which to retire for the night. Problem: Mrs Hen number two in the pecking order has got a chick on the way and at the moment is not shy in giving number one's new chicks a peck on the head. Do I have to keep both broods separate or do I just let em 'muck in' and let nature take it's course?

Mrs Hen No2 is having a bit of hormonal jalousy against Mrs Hen No1's brood. Happens to the best of us... I know a human (Yes! a human!) Mrs Hen who could not bear any other Mrs Hens and their broods near her until her own chick was out. She'd go quite nasty about these clucking Mother Hens. To avoid any serious bickering between all these Mrs Hens, it was decided to put the hormonally jalous and angry Mrs Hen out of the chicken nursery run until she had her brood! Now all is back to normal and all is well in the poulailler !... Just some minor teazes with the Mr Cockerels at the occasional gathering around the drinking fountain and roasting pit, but nothing that can't be sorted out with a rolling pin!!!...:¬))!! Alexis
Aren't you lucky. My coq is firing blanks.....One hen sat for a very long time and we had to shift her in the end and then little Heidi fought like a tigress when I booted her out and took her eggs. She had been sitting for over a month too.I'm going to have that coq....and he knows!
Bannon
Hot off the nest. Mrs Hen was sat on two eggs.... but only one has hatched so now we have four chicks and the all muck in together. Both hens have decided to sleep outside of the hutch snuggled up next to each other, each with their respective chick(s) underneath. One chick had great fun yesterday jumping on Mum's back and sliding down the side. Third attempt got it a sharp peck. Great being a new chicken watcher!
