I am trying to find a wiring diagram to wire an English telephone to a French telephone plug, I have done it before but have lost the diagram. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Sorry, not the wall socket but the plug on the phone cable!

Here goes;

As I can't remember the pin numbers, hold the French plug with the pins pointing to your left and the wider alignment piece at the bottom (as if it was going into a socket) and the the line is the top two pins facing you. (try looking at it, it is more obvious!). These go to pins 2 & 5 on a "BT" socket.

Use a master socket if you want a UK ringer circuit to work.

I hope that makes sense!

Hi Pech,

Does your telephone have a removable line cord (where it connects into the telephone?)  If so, you should be able to buy a replacement French telephone line cable from the electrical department in a French hypermarket or electronics shop.  Note however that some UK telephones / fax machines will not ring when directly connected to a French telephone socket.  This is due to the way the ringing circuit is wired in UK spec phones.

Your best option possibly is as Nick says, to connect a UK master telephone socket into the French socket with a short piece of telephone cable (terminals 2 and 5 in the BT socket to the top 2 on the left side of the FT socket when you take the cover off) and then plug your UK phone into the BT socket.  You can buy a master socket and cable from DIY or electronics shops like Maplin for about £5.

This company used to sell a neat ready made BT > FT socket adapter which has the master socket components to make the phone ring.  I’ve just had a look at their site, but there are no French adapters at the moment (maybe they’re just temporarily out of stock?)  http://www.revealcable.co.uk/acatalog/Telephone_Country_Adapters.html

This may also help you (the bit “you need to connect to contacts 1 and 3 …..”):  http://www.francemag.com/frmag/content/bulletinBoard/msgcontent.asp?ID=2278&GroupID=11
