Where to Ski?

Its our second skiing holiday, and we are still novices, well hubby and I are, the kids think they are not.  Was thinking of Valmorel, anyone any reviews on this resort and recommendations of places to stay.  We did Saint Sorlin last year and really enjoyed it.

Gets a bit icy as it is north facing and then a bit slushy in Valmorel.

I love Avoiraz. No cars. Slopes of all levels. Nice ambiance.  Great kids ski school too. And our kids have been in other clubs there too. We used to go up there quite a lot.

I am also very fond of Courchevel 1850, there are eggs up to the top of a wonderful green slope. It isn't too steep and lovely and wide and the snow in general is very very good and the slopes impeccably maintained.

The resort near to my house (St Francois Longchamp) is connected with Valmorel, but I've only been across once. On that occasion it wasn't icy and I enjoyed, but I do seem to recall that the run down into the "town square" is quite steep and busy. From what I saw, I liked the layout and ambiance.

My sister is a novice and she likes Val Frejus best (Long live the Maurienne), the main ski area is a gondola ride out of the resort which means that even beginners get the wonderful feel of being high in the mountains. I've been skiing for quite a few years (but am still c**p) and it has enough runs for those who don't think they are novices. Val Frejus also has a small out door ski rink.

It does depend a bit on whether you want to go with a tour operator or under you own steam and, I suppose, how much you want a vibrant Apres Ski. There are lots and lots of small resorts that are lovely, but you will not see them in the brochures because the companies concentrate their efforts on certain areas in order to dominate the hoteliers / fill buses / manage reps / etc.

As "relative novices" (that's 2 novices and 2 olympic downhillers ) you probably do just need to stay in one resort with everything on hand, but when you are more experience, having a base in the Valley and then choosing a resort day by day can be great fun (but not for the Apres Ski).

I'd also be glad to hear of any recommendations: we need to go somewhere good for kids (3, 5, 7), ie with a nice 'jardin des neiges', and with plenty of beginner/intermediate skiing for us. Also somewhere where lift passes are reasonably priced; no point paying for a superduper multi-area pass that we won't use to the full. Anyone got any ideas?
