Mark
I've heard talk on this forum before of a definitive guide to raising chickens. There seem to be several options on Amazon, but could someone give me the title of the one that everyone seems to think is the best please? Thanks. zeb
You could ask your questions here. Keeping chooks is easy (unless you are intending to run a poultry farm)! I've got four (two Marans and two Light Sussex - good layers). I fenced off a bit of land, built a house for them from pallets, bought them as vaccinated point of lay at a local market (watched to see which stall the french were buying from), bought crushed maize from the local agri co=op and a metal water container, sat back, watched and waited!!Seriously though, we've had the same four hens for three years, they have bread and watered down milk for breakfast and then crushed maize and any greens/veggie peeling for lunch and I get about 3 eggs a day. They are great fun but have to be shut in at dusk and let out first thing in the morning so I haven't had a Sunday lie in since getting them! The only books I have are general ones covering home raised animals, fruit and veggies - John Seymore's self sufficiency bible and Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's River Cottage cookbook. Any problems and I just post on this forum.Good luck!
The Riff-Raff Element
"Small Scale Poultry Keeping" by Ray Feltwell was the most useful to me when I first started.

Bannon
We read several books on chickens and found nothing served better than to buy a couple from the local market in the spring, bash a hut together, and watch em scratch around. Great fun and great eggs. We've also raised three chicks two of which turned out be be cockerels! Any questions we just asked on this forum and got some really good advice.
