bixy
I recently discovered that our department - 58 -has a population density [people per sq.km.] of 33. This compares to 383 for England, 110 for france, 114 for the EU, Scotland 65, Northumberland 71 [England's least populous county]. So pretty quiet then. I wonder how many depts. in France are less densely populated than this. Any ideas? Anyone know of a website that lists the population densities of French depts?Patrick
Perlats
I had to look 58 up, I must admit I have never heard of Nièvre before. Tell us more about it! Sorry I can't help with population densities for departements.

Mpprh
HiI'd heard Lozere was the least populated dept, and it certainly seems empty when you visit.INSEE quote 15 per km2 Peter
Benjamin
The density in the Vendee (listed under Pays de La Loire) is exactly the same as the department number - 85!!!!!!!!!!!!! Benjamin
Liz
How fascinating. I am surprised that our Department has such a high figure at 129 when it always seems to me very rural and quiet. No vast areas that have no population at all I suppose.I have been collecting car numbers (a silly childish pastime), starting at 01 and I got stuck on 11 for months until a couple of days ago. Now I see why, not many there and they certainly don't get about much . Liz (29)
Alcazar
Not surprised at the Lozere. 15 inhabitants per .Didn't Stephenson describe it as "Lozere, misere" in "Voyages in the Cevennes with a Donkey"?Apologies to those (few) of you who live thereAlcazar
Patf
Our dept. Gers 32 has also very low density 28. I remember reading a few months ago that the Prefecture or whatever wanted to build up the population as it was so depleted. There are so many unworked farms around. Pat.
