Clarkkent
In centuries past people used to terrify each other with horror stories as they sat around their hearths in midwinter. Here is one for the 21st Century in France:According to something I heard on the BBC, following the car torching festival of a few weeks ago, there has been an upsurge in people of North African origin registering to vote. In the last French presidential election the fragmented party structure resulted in the two front runners each receiving less than 20% of the total vote. If an Islamic figure emerges with wide appeal within the immigrant community, the front runners could be him and a neo-nazi like Le Pen - and Sarkozy would be sidelined ... Teamedup
You are right it would be a 21 st century horror story. Personally I find the idea of Mr Sarkozy a bit of a horror story too.
Tresco
Tee Hee, TU. Apparently there are posters up in Paris with a picture of Sarkozy, captioned 'Vote Le Penn' (or vice versa). According to something I heard on the BBC, following the car torching festival of a few weeks ago, there has been an upsurge in people of North African origin registering to vote. (CK)I've been following this since the 20th, when there was a 'get out the vote' rally in Clichy-sous-Bois (where the two teenagers died in the power station). A few people registered after that meeting, and the numbers increased there and other districts as the days went by. There were a few reports on the evening news this week which showed lots of new voters completing their registrations. One thing I noticed in the interviews was that some of the youngsters were saying, 'I want to vote against Sarkozy'. Now I may be wrong, but are they not registering to vote in the municiple elctions for 2006, rather than the presidential in 2007?As there is no prominent politician of North African descent at present, and as (as I understand it) most practising muslims here are moderate, it would be pretty astonishing if someone with a radical 'islamic' agenda got that far. 0zeb100ddMMyyyy0Falseen-USTrue
HelloI think we should all hope that Sarko gets the top job. There isn't anyone else who shows the slightest spark of imagination. Hopefully when Sarko is president we will see the silly restrictive french social model kicked into touch and a realistic market led model put into place.France has suffered long enough under the burden of socialism/communism, which restricts enterprise and discourages risk taking. People will have to learn to stand on their own feet and not rely on the nanny state.Regards and have a happy new year y'all.
Tresco
Be careful what you wish for Zeb100: Sarko is the only senior politician who has made it clear he is in favour of measures which we might term 'positive discimination'.Anyway, there may be a surprise strong candidate in the offing. Segolene Royale is widely tipped to be the Socialist Party candidate; she's president of Poitou-Charente at the moment; she is never off the tv here, and 'performs' very well too. Never mind the policies - she's still working those out - get a load of those cheekbones!http://www.ambafrance-us.org/atoz/bio/bio_royal.asp
le bouffon
Well said Zeb,the pc zaelots in the UK may have finished the "long march"(a quote from P. Hichens`s book)but in France they still have a long way to go,and will never win over the mainstream French to that madness call P.C.
0zeb100ddMMyyyy0Falseen-USTrue
HelloThat's ok Tresco but with the socialists it's just more of the same (a nation of hypercondriac zombies). France needs a Maggie Thatcher. If they want a bit of positive discrimination fine, it will soon shake it's self out. Er and where pray are these positive discriminative people coming from, a gang of no good drug fuelled idiots from the mean streets. I don't think so some how, do you? Any way I think that only people who are shareholders in companies that pay "taxe professional" should have a vote.Reegards and have a nice day. [/quote]I was kind of joking, but really, she has got great bone structure. So did Thatcher.I'm still getting over that inspiring 'quote from Peter Hitchens book', what was it? "long march". Amazing, two words; just 9 letters: the quoter should use it as a signature, it's just that good. There is no 'zaelot' like a 'zaeolot' who has changed radically changed their view, eh? chris pp
I actually think that Segolene Royale is a force to be reckoned with, certainly not to be underestimated, she sleeps in the knife draw. I have meet people who work for her - she's not soft that"s for sure and she has her eye on the top job - maybe not yet, but she doesn't have Sarko's baggage - he can't afford another slip up.Chris. Tresco
Re Sarko: Speaking as a fairly long term Sarko Watcher, he seems to be able to slither around between all manner of 'slip ups'. Re Ms Royale..... Wow, someone else has heard of her. There was me thinking everyone was just watching Eastenders on a regular basis (only joking, it's the time of the year, and I hate the new smiley creatures). I think she definitely does have her eye on the top job, and despite having noticed her about three seconds after arriving here, (over 2 years ago) and wondering....wondering about her constant, extremely skilled and attractive media presence - in Poitou Charentes, at least - I am still not sure what she can bring to the table. I say this particularly in the context of the thread CK started, but also, with regard to international policy, the internal party and (potential) domestic strife. These factors alone have been getting her plenty of 'airtime' but is that enough, even at this early stage?Merci, Chrispp, for making me feel not quite so alone... Teamedup
I am not sure if the french nation is yet ready for a female president, she would be preferable in my eyes.

SaligoBay
Someone tried to explain to me the other night how Sarko was different from Thatcher. It was a bit late on New Year's Eve, so it's a bit fuzzy, but something along these lines.....Whether you liked Thatcher or not, at least she had an ideology. In Communist Russia she'd have been some sort of refusenik, not quite like Solzhenitsyn but somewhere similar.Sarko wants to be President Sarko, end of story. In Communist Russia he'd have made a nice place for himself as head of the Politburo.Le Pen should be put permanently into a home for retired donkeys. le bouffon
Did you know that the donkey was the beast of burden or that the donkey is a catalan icon.Give me Le Pen every time!Like the 17.5% of the french that where not put off by the torrent of abuse during the last french election,I bet many more would of voted for his party with out such abuse. Teamedup
LOL I find it so funny that you are pro Le Pen. I always believe that he would not be keen on his patrimone being taken over by the brits and would, if ever the unfortnate day came about that he had power, would do something about it. I reckon that the brits would be on his 'to do' list, first thing would be getting out of the EU and then the beurs and then les anglais.

0zeb100ddMMyyyy0Falseen-USTrue
Hi I know lets have a President Tapi. I think he would make a really good pres. We would have a really well balanced leadership.Regards
le bouffon
Well how nice to know is that, after how long bemoaning France and the french ways you now feel some kind of kinship with the French, the best thing that could happen to France would be Le Pen and then for the EU if the guy who was voted in in Austria and if the two guys who where killed in Holland(by a muslim ,FACT)where voted in office.France out of the EU,no more crazy spend on the CAP etc....and....if only, did you hear the UKIP guy give it to blair last week,1billion pounds blair gave away of british tax payer money, and that was just for starters!!!!! Teamedup
Stuff and nonsense, as per usual. When you know a bit about France and the french we could perhaps have some sort of discussion, but as it is, my opinion about you and your views is not very high. le bouffon
I do not think I would ever want or feel the need to have a discussion with you as you seem to already know it all,and also which bit of my last post do you feel is untrue?

The Riff-Raff Element
Buffoon - Doesn't that rather assume that you might have some capital with whichto establish yourself south of the boarder? Even if you were able tosell your properties here before they were taken from you, what kind ofprice do you imagine you might get for them? I suppose you could alwaysclaim refugee status...
