First ever Housse de Couette

Recommended Posts

I have just bought my first ever french one in the Carreblanc sale,

what is the strange bit at one end that makes it look like a cowl

necked  jumper?

Also for double beds there were three sizes 140cm, 160cm and 180cm. We

have a UK king size which is approx 150cm, I bought the 160cm and will

sew two 'tram-lines' appox 5cm in from the sides to stop the duvet from

slipping arround. Does this mean bedlinen for a UK king size is not

readly available in France. Its not really a problem as it is quite

easy to ajust the size by sewing. I am just curious.

It has been discussed on here before, but bedding is not always the same size.

Single quilts and their covers are bigger than in the UK, and are the same size as german ones.

Doubles are about the same size and therefore transferrable.

Kings are bigger in France too.

Don't know about superkings as I have never bought any.

That flap is called a rabat and I hate the things. You tuck it under the mattress at the bottom of the bed. Some people like them, I do not. I bought some single quilt covers in Germany to go on my french quilts as they have no rabats and fit.
Sorry forgot to add that a standard double bed in France is 140, king is 160 and superking is 180. Singles are usually 90 wide and my son has a three quarter bed that is 120.
...............................and a lot of the old beds that you find in the Depot Ventes are 130, for which mattresses are not readily available, so take your tape measure !!

Regards

Chris
