The Riff-Raff Element
I heard on the wireless this morning that free range producers ofchicken in the Landes (well, 50 of them, anyway) were to be allowed toput their flocks back outside. There were some conditions (feedinginside, vet's visits) and that otherwise the current regulations wouldremain until May 31st. HOWEVER, on the same programe (Europe 1) it saidthat the governement were today taking advice from some terribly cleverpeople about the need to continue with the ban at all on the basis thatdead tweeters had ceased plummeting from the heavens.Does anyone know anything further about this? La vieille
Not that particular issue, but on our last visit to the Vendée earlier this month, we were surprised to see the chickens out. When I asked our neighbours who farm thousands of the birds, they said they were permitted to put them in the fields after 2pm! You obviously cannot get bird flu after 2pm each day! zeb
Well, I let my four go back to their run about 2 weeks ago. One died (perhaps of shock) the same day but the others are happier than they've been for weeks, and laying! Our neighbours, who never shut theirs up, said, one gets fined, we all get fined. Suits me. Deimos
There is a chicken, goose, turkey, etc. farm near me (1Km away) and when I was out for a walk the other day there were a load of geese wandering around outside. They are not a “free range” farm (as they have loads of sheds to house birds), though do tend to have a small free range area for turkeys (which was used last autumn but not at the moment. They are quite “out-of-the-way” but they again, they are a fairly large and do quiet a lot of sales direct (big signs to get tourists to visit them, etc.).Not keeping any birds myself I do not know what regulations are in effect but was surprised seeing the geese out there the other day.Ian
