Will
I've just been watching a programme on BBC4 about Jake Thackray, somebody whom I have always enjoyed. One of the topics was the influence of Georges Brassens (and to a lesser extent Jacques Brel). The similarities between Brassens and Thackray are quite amazing - although I've always liked Brassens too, so shame on me that I'd never connected the two. Thackray apparently spent a lot of time in France before becoming a teacher in Leeds, and spoke excellent French with little in the way of an accent. The singing and playing styles of Thackray and Brassens were very similar, as were the wry, witty and often ribald nature of their songs. Jake Thackray translated some Brassens songs into English, and invited the great man to play a concert in Cardiff - which the programme said was the only time he performed in a non-French speaking country.
