The ebb and flow of migrants...

Recommended Posts

There have been some interesting and thought-provoking conversations on here recently about people quitting France to return to the UK; some of whom have lived in France for quite a few years. These discussions may have caused people heading in the opposite direction to wonder if they are doing the right thing...

I don't actually think that the level of Brits heading for and living in France will vary that much because as some go home, more folk - at different stages of their lives - will be heading in the opposite direction. As we go through life, we get the desire to do different things at different ages. So, in my opinion, there will always be an ebb and flow of Brits going to and from France, Spain and anywhere else that holds an appeal for us.

For people in the process of starting out on their dream move to France - go for it! If that is what you want and you've done all your planning and heeded all the warnings - go for it.

When I collected my hire van yesterday to head off to the Loire on Monday, the manager said, "This coming week, I will have eight vehicles in France, the most ever. I am thinking of increasing my van fleet." And this is probably one of the smallest rental companies in the Norwich area.

Life is short - be happy!

I have a theory, absolutely no proof or evidence at all, only crystal- balling, that there is about to be a resurgence in british people moving to France. Because the craze for buying in eastern Europe is dying out - too many problems. And people are getting fed up with Spain - over saturation and problems there too. So if they have the money, and the interest rates don't go soaring in UK, they will turn back to France. Another point, Pras, is that as you say there has always been some people who want to go and live abroad, but the difference is that in the past they usually got a job first before leaving. Now many hope to start something after arrival. Pat.

Doesn't  the flow rate also depend on conditions in UK. Right now, for many people, housing is impossible, taxes are impossible and the thought of GB as prime minister is the last impossible. And those who want to release equity in thier wildly overpriced homes are also getting out. Plus the naive greass is greener brigade of course.

I am in agreement with the posters that the French property market is poised for resurgence. I am a market watcher/investor in Europe. I try to spot trends. Political and social change in France is coming soon, partly through globalisation but principally because the French are bored with the political staus quo. What will likely follow in my opinion is a much improved economic business climate in France. It's really not that difficult to work out. Stagnation has a limited appeal even to the left. There will be difficulties along the way, pain for some but if you know France well you will see the need for change is everywhere. Those of us who have invested heavily in France many years ago are quietly waiting for a return. Buy now whilst stocks last!
