Ian
After considerable chopping and splitting my woodstore is pretty measly and while I know I am running stocks down due to moving house nevertheless, I am feeling some woodpile envy. Some of those stockages are HUGE.Who's got the biggest?[;-)]
Catalpa
You touch on something that I have pondered for some years. Many men (nationality irrelevant but okay, it's probably a genetic thing for French men) seem somewhat obsessed by their woodpile. I have wondered whether there is some correlation between size of woodpile and size of other appendage/s. I'm just not sure which way the correlation goes... humongous woodpile, small appendage?Women don't seem to have the same fascination with the size of a woodpile - though I'm sure in any home, size matters. Eos
Sorry Catalpa! In our house, I'm the pryomaniac and have spent part of the last couple of days moving the remainder of other years wood to the side of the pile to allow easier access for the delivery and use of this years stock which arrives on Friday. Joy! Husband Mine would help but I'm too fussy so we agreed years ago that the fire is my area and he should sit back and enjoy! As they say, wood warms you twice, once in the stacking and once in the fire! Catalpa
But, Eos, how obsessed are you with the size of the woodpile? I'm our foyer's pyro too... but I'm perhaps more interested in quality (oak and beech... though ash is good too) than the height and breadth. Patf
I would have thought a woodpile obsession was more akin to the anal stage of development rather than the phallic. An earlier, more immature stage
mint
PatfSorry, to me a woodpile is just that, a woodpile, nothing to do with anuses or penises. Ours is HUGE and we are glad of it because we have a woodburner in the sitting-room and a woodburner oven in the kitchen. Our first winter here, so will be testing out the appliances and watching to see how the woodpile dwindles. chris pp
Large quantities of firewood are "money in the bank", no different to preserving food, it's having a stock for the future, as many years worth as possible.Seems quite logical to me if you live a basic type of life in the countryside. Needless to say we have a large stock of wood.Chris
Eos
Catalpa, I quite agree that size may be unimportant but then that may be easy for me to say as mine is the biggest in the neighbourhood....!

Mr Coeur de Lion
Surely the brag should be who uses the least wood? We used just over 2 stere last winter, have ordered another 2 this month which should take our pile up to around 3.5 stere. A far cry from the 8 stere we used in our first year! Pads
Its not about using it .............its just about how much you have piled up[8-)] I think it stems back to the hunter gatherer man who needs to be able to feel hes providing food, heat and sercurity for his family[:)]
