Clair
There is a TV programme on the Mai 68 worldwide events tonight on FR2 at 20:50:http://programmes.france2.fr/68/
Cat
I know a bit about the history behind the events that led up to mai 68 in France, but can anyone explain what it actually achieved? I've seen the same question asked on TV, and no one seems to have an answer. It does worry me that the same thing could quite well happen again this May, in a kind of anniversary replay, and makes me question who exactly is pulling the strings behind the scenes. Clair
They lead to De Gaulle departure from the political scene a year later, on the back of a referendum which went against his desire to change the way the state exercised power. There is a good Wiki page (in French) here: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mai_1968#Cons.C3.A9quences_de_Mai_68On a personal basis, I remember a young college teacher who asked us to call her Françoise. She was a breath of fresh air in our rather stilted college and her almost hippy-ish clothes were a constant source of amazement, when compared to the way other teachers dressed. She organised and supported our theatre group and gave us free-rain to think and debate. Her attitude to teaching was completely at the opposite end of what we had been used to and now I know she was a direct result of the changes of mai 68. Gluestick
Wasn't this also the series of events that caused the Gaullist government to found the CRS?
Clair
If the CRS did nto exist in mai 68, who was doing the policing during the riots?I'll definitely watch this tonight.
Christine Animal
Yes, they were certainly there with the famous slogan CRS = SS.I shall watch it too, as we here never really saw all that went on. I remember my parents seeing different views of the events on their television.
Gluestick
I have a bug in my mind that De Gaulle was the politician who created the CRS from the old National Guard etc.?Anyone know when they were in fact founded in their current form?

Gluestick
Thanks, Clair. Was it that De Gaulle allowed young men to join the CRS instead of the army for their national service?Something bugs me apart from the Sorbonne riots!
Clair
The CRS are part of the Police Nationale.Looking at the history of the military service (called national service from 1959), in Jan 59, the choice was either military or defense service. Later and still in 59, the choice was either military, cooperation or techical service. In June 1971, the national service code was extended to include a response to all forms of aggression against the security and integrity of the country and the lives of its people. That might be what you're thinking of.Pompidou was the French president then.http://www.nithart.com/servmifr.htm
