Temporary Importation from outside the EU

Recommended Posts

Now and again I receive goods (musical instruments) for repair from outside the EU. The instruments are then returned to the owners after repair. Does anyone have any knowledge of the process for avoiding the TVA and import duties payable. This is a real disincentive for clients as I have to pass on any charges I receive - which are usually demanded by the courier.

I have looked at the Douanes website and of course there are immensely complicated rules and regulations for all sorts of stuff from nuclear material to fresh human organs... Is there a fairly simple method of doing this or am I just being foolish in thinking that it really needn't be so complicated ?

I just wondered if anyone here has any experience of this before I take a trip to the local Customs Office.... where I see the potential for lots of headshaking and Oh la las and That's how it is etc

This is perfectly possible and is fairly straightforward.

There is a form (the name of which escapes me) which allows temporary importation for e.g. repair against payment of a deposit of any charges which might be due if the article was permanantly imported.  When the item is shipped out, another form is stamped and you get your deposit back A shipping agent could do this for you and would normally put up his bond to cover the import.  Of course he would charge you for this.

This is no problem at all if your local Douanes is a port or airport as this happens all the time,  might be a different story if 'inland' as they may never deal with this at all.
