I think that this has to be the most stupid thing I've ever read.

As one of the correspondents under the article wrote, I'm pleased I moved abroad if this is the level of absolute nonsense that the UK local authorities are reduced to.  Trouble is that some of us in local government saw this coming in the late 80s/early 90s but we were always over ruled by the 'policy makers' and the 'special advisers' to the national and local politicians.

I know we can find plenty of examples from GB / USA but being a limited French speaker (and reader) just wondered if France has similar 'challenges' [:D]

As for the justification from the council, what failure of basic mental capacity and reasoning is it that prevents these prize prats from understand that 'Mother' and 'adult acting as escort' are not the same thing.

Slap 'em??    I think it deserves more than that. 

So a mother is not allowed to escort her disabled child to school without security screening now?    What about unfit parents who drive their kids about drunk then - one on tv the other day who was dobbed-in to the Police by her elder daughters who were worried that their mother continuously drove their little sister around having quaffed large amounts of wine.    She will be back on the road before you know it - will she be security screened as a suitable escort for a child? I think not.

I would say "Whatever next?.........................." only none of the PC lunacy coming out of the UK really surprises me any more.  [:(]

My cousin retired as a magistrate this year but is still on what I believe is called the 'panel'. This means she can sit with trainee magistrates, visit schools for talks etc. Until she told me I didn't realise that you have to be CRB'd for each activity - this means that if she went to schools she would need to go through the process (presumably for each LEA) and then if she received an invitation to talk to the Guides or St Johns Ambulance she would have to go through the process again!

Is it any wonder that ordinary people are complacent about helping out with youth based projects ?

RH, you are a big softie, really you are. Don't you see that this just creates more comfy part time workers getting full time pay and indexed pensions at sixty who are in the situation of being able to judge and perhaps condemn people without being responsible for their acts? Rather like the family courts too.

Thus, multiply the work to survive and create more useless jobs in the pubic sector. And let public hysteria be the justification.

Wooly - I'm not sure what you are referring to, magistrates are not paid and I know my cousin certainly went on training days/courses etc especially in her area of interest. There is always a legally qualified person in attendance for guidance. They also retire at 70, not 60.

In any case the point is that it seems a complete waste of resources to keep checking people, couldn't their be a license like a driving license, that would speed things up.

Not magistrates RH, they do a good job for nowt I seem to remember from my days reporting court proceedings for the local rag, but the time serving wasters of space who spend their time investigating other people's lives, again and again.

By coincidence Ester Ranzen mentioned this very topic today on 'The Wright Stuff'. Her son, a medical student wanted to do voluntary work in his vacation, he had already been CRB'd for his work in hospital as part of his course, but as it was a different Health Authority he had to get permission again, the process was so slow that the opportunity was missed !
