kimg
Can anyone suggest the best way to keep the chill off an empty house.I have owned my Dept 62 home for a yesr and have noticed a couple of damp patches appearing. It is left locked up for a maximum of a month at the time though i try to give it a good airing when im there and leave the inner doors open when i am away.It is suggested i use a couple of small caravan heaters on a timer.Any suggestions would be appreciated. kim
Owens88
What heat sources do you have (electric , CH etc. ?). You don't anything that is 'burning' i.e. generates damp.John
Pickles
Why not use a dehumidifier? You may need to sort out an arrangement to take the excess water either away or to store it up between visits, but it might be rather cheaper than running heating.RegardsPickles
AnOther
If you have damp patches appearing after only a month of non-habitation I would suggest you may have a problem which needs looking into properly rather than just curing the visible symptoms. That said many old stone houses are inherently damp due to their construction, no DPC, semi porous stone etc., and often there is precious little you can do to stop it so a dehumidifier as Pickles suggests may be your best option. Pads
Will your insurance allow you to leave the electric on while you are not there? mine wont it has to be turned off at the mains. Luckerly we dont suffer from damp but it would be nice to be able to leave the central heating on slightly while we wernt there as its like a ice box when we come in the winter.
