Hello again! Any ideas please?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks...

I have not been on the Forum for some time, in fact, since August 2008, my visits have been quite few and far between.

Last year I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Believe me, I was very worried and re-writing my will was just one example of my anguish. I had a six-hour operation at the end of November and I am now in my fifth week of recovery. I get my next condition update at the beginning of March, but I am currently doing well.

And the point of telling you this?

Well, prior to my illness, my regular trips from Norwich to the Loches area consisted of a 500 mile+ drive in one day, arriving at my destination totally knackered. But now the doctors have told me that when I make future trips (hopefully starting again at the end of February) I have to avoid total tiredness by stopping overnight en route.

As such, can anybody recommend any friendly, reasonably priced and very clean B&B by the A.28 somewhere in the area of Alencon (or thereabouts)?

Thanks in anticipation....

Hi Mel, sorry to hear of your news, wish you well for 2009.

Just shooting from the hip, travelled back from Norwich today so have an idea of the time etc.  LD lines are begining the new Dover to Dieppe service soon. That boat trip is quite long so if you book a cabin you could get some good rest before the next leg accoss France.

Thanks for the responses folks and the good wishes Leo...

Big Mac - that looks a really nice place and I have 'bookmarked' the website.

teapot - that is a good idea - especially so because we like the port of Dieppe, but are not keen on Newhaven, so Dover to Dieppe could be the answer...

There is a motel style chain called B&B hotels and there is one situated on the north side of Alencon in an industrial estate not far from the A28.

Best of luck with your recovery. Last year both my brother and a friend had minor scares with prostate problems so I got myself down to the docs. It was a simple blood test (no physical examination) and very reassuring to get the results. The doctor recommends one every year for the over 60's.

Hi Benjamin - thanks and I agree about the regular PSA checks...

Last spring, at 59, I had no symptoms whatsoever and only went for the check because a friend in France was quite unwell with the condition. He advised me to get checked. So, I did, expecting a reassuring 'OK' result. Not so. After a biopsy and other tests, I was found to have 'moderately active' cancer in my prostate that required action. Fortunately, it seems it has been caught in time and I should be back to normal this year.

The good news is for other men, my level of cancer was not as common as many other chaps find. Generally, it is less serious and can be dealt with relatively easily. So, to all you blokes in your 50's, 60's and above -  take a leaf out of our ladies books who happily trot along for regular check-ups for female problems - do the same for your blokes ailments - get checked!!

Sorry about your news, Mel.  In other circs I'd have offered to put you up but that's difficult as present as, as you probably know, I'm laid up myself at the mo'.

The sausage - known as Cassis on this forum, has just the thing for you, as he runs the very thing you look for.  Alternatively I can recommend Le Point du Jour in St Cosme en Vairais - not too far from the m/way.  I'll look up the details later but I've got physio in 5 mins![:)]
