I am interested in buying a piece of woodland in order to provide wood for my wood burner, can anyone advise the going rate for for an hectare of woodland in Charente with easy access to a road? any advise welcome on how to proceed and any pitfalls associated with such a purchase. Maxwell

The villages in our area (southern Burgundy) each have their own forest.  In November each year we are allocated a patch of woodland which we must clear during the winter, and we bring the logs out before the end of the summer.  We pay a tax of 42 euros a plot but otherwise the wood is free.  Would there be a similar scheme where you are?

We have to clear all the trees except the really big oaks which are earmarked for the commune and must be left.  We cut the logs and stack them.  The twiggy bits and the rotten wood have to be burned, along with any undergrowth or brambles, so the site is left quite tidy.

Maxwell - sorry I have no idea of the cost of woodland in your area, but I've been watching the progress of deforestation near us.

The woods in the Gers are mainly on the crests and sides of long hilly ridges. They seem to be owned by neighbouring farmers, some of whom are selling them off to large timber companies. Some farmers just sell the trees, then reclaim the land for planting cereals.

There are at least two harmful consequences - removal of a barrier to prevailing winds, and landslip, as the trees helped to shore up the hills. Not far from us a road has slid down into a valley after clearance of trees.

So I suppose the advice is, don't buy woodland on a hillside, if you plan to cut it.
