Recensement de la Population

Bugsy

Recommended Posts

I've just recieved notification of a census from the Marie to take place between15th January and the 14th February.

Is this a national event or just local?

It should bring out a few of the brits that are hiding in france..............[:D][:D]

We filled in our form last year. And  had also completed one in another commune but the same dept., in 2003.

They seem to spread them out over the years in different areas in France, not like the UK, where it's done all in one year.

Yes, they do spread them around. I remember that a little while ago the powers that be in Normandy decided that their region appeared far too rustic and full of dairy farmers and the like. So they decided they would improve the look of things by including more urban areas than rural ones in the census.

I have been given a 108-page manual...[:'(]

It says that:

The info is used to count the local and national population and assess the needs of the commune. Among other things, the number of inhabitants determines how many pharmacies are required, the type of voting system and how official notifications are made public.

The info collected is NOT shared with any other administration. It is used to assess the characteristics of the population and the housing conditions.

The info on the persons is used for statistics to illustrate the population by gender, age, matrimonial status, nationality, education and profession.

The info is used by local government to assess future needs: schools, hospitals, transports and infrastructure.

All the assessors have been given an ID card. They can help complete the forms in all confidentiality.

The forms will be handed over by the assessors from 15th Jan and can either be returned to the mairie or collected by the assessors.

 • 3 weeks later...

We have just had ours

Yes they want to know everything?

You even have to put your Name & Address on all forms, just so the Mairie knows who has what in there houses

3 toilets - 2 showers - 2 baths - what you use for heating - and the overall size of the house

Then the second form asks you personnel details, where you came from, where you lives in 2001? are you working, are you at school, do you employ anyone?

And again your name and address goes on this to

Did we have to put our names and address on the ones we filled in in the UK??

Funny enough, a friend has just called to see me and said, have you seen how quite our ville is? there are no cars parked outside the houses?

there are no cars parked in the squares? and all the shutters are shut? its like a ghost village!

Could it be that they have all gone visiting relatives in other towns until the censor people have all finished?? I wondered why my next door neighbours had gone to Paris for the next few weeks and also why when the censor lady called at my door a Frenchman I know walking his dog put his hand across his mouth ! I thought he was coughing, no probley telling me to keep my mouth zipped!

You must have a rather unique form to complete, as there is no question asking to specify the number of bathrooms or WCs on the ones I am currently helping people to complete... [Www]

They ask for names and addresses to ensure people are not counted several times.

As a clarification, the mairie is asked to collect the forms on behalf of the INSEE. They do not need a list of who lives where or who owns which property, as the details already are known through the local tax forms.

We have one of those 'unique' forms too:

"caractéristiques et confort du logement" is the name at the top

But this doesn't ask how many bathrooms you have , just if you have any or not[8-)]

Absolutely right - teach me to read the thing properly. In mitigation we have only just received it, from a charming young man on a motor bike, and it is our very first.
Do they send these to everyone with a property in France... eg. non-residents?
Every property is counted, whether it is a main residence or not.

An official at the mairie is tasked with following up in cases where the agent du recensement is unable to assess whether the property is a main residence or a second home.

Re bathrooms...

I have posted this in French in another thread:
The form offers three levels to describe the bathroom situation:

     * Without a shower or bath

     * With shower or bath in a room which is not a bathroom

     * With a bathroom or shower-room

Since I started last week, I have seen four houses without a bathroom...
As intrusive as they seem, such questions help assess the types of housing and their condition.

One of those properties would be more aptly described as a hovel and the others could barely be described as "habitable", yet they are lived in, mainly inhabited by elderly people living on their own.
