Tonyforge
There's a very active French association, Paysages de France, which tracks down, and has removed, illegally installed billboards and signs. In the Tarn et Garonne department there's scarcely a week goes by without a large sign being torn down and now the local group, after running out of targets, has moved on to the Lot and the Tarn regions where they are starting to have their first victories. (at Mazamet (Tarn) over 100, illegally installed 12m² signs were taken down last year). It's all reported in the local press and on the association's website. Personally, I've never understood how the French seemingly accept the massacre of their town entrances especially as each town has the right to limit the number of billboards in their commune...does anyone else agree? Jonzjob
That tempete a few of weeks back did a lot of their work for them me thinks. I can only agree that there are too many signs and they are not a pleasing sight, but as a forigner here I don't feel that I have any right to try to change the way things are and have been run for a very long time now. It's like driving on the wrong side of the road init Ron [6]?When in Rome, wear a toga?
Clair
As I remember it, the cause was a good one, but very poorly represented by the person who posted here. His fiercely argumentative and dismissive manner put a lot of people off and detracted from the activities of the group he represented.
Sunday Driver
Personally, I find those signs very useful when I'm on my travels. How else am I going to find where the nearest McDonalds is..........[;-)]

[;-)] Yes, definitely looks that way.I like the hoardings... I don't need to find my way to McDo often (...ever...[:D]) but hoardings for hotels, restaurants and information about which road the local supermarket (and therefore well-priced-ish fuel) is situated is always very useful in an unfamiliar town.
