Frenchie
Pretty soon.....The situation is terrible, riots, violence...It was predictable it would happen one day.People there have the feeling they are second rate citizens. So much unemployment........So much injustice.Tourists have been warned..They won't get a suntan, so unfair !!!Travel AlertU.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATEBureau of Consular Affairs This information is current as of today, Wed Feb 18 09:52:18 2009.French West Indies February 13, 2009This Travel Alert is to alert U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Guadeloupe and Martinique, French West Indies (FWI), that ongoing labor strikes in the region may affect social, economic and tourist services. It is possible that these strikes will spread to other French overseas departments. This Travel Alert expires on May 13, 2009. Due to ongoing labor strikes, riot police from mainland France are now stationed in Martinique and Guadeloupe. Most commercial activities have ceased, and there are mounting shortages of food, water, and power on both islands. In Martinique, strikes and large-scale street protests continue. Gas stations, stores, the port, and banks remain closed. There are continuing interruptions in power and rapidly dwindling water and food supplies. In Guadeloupe there are reports of increasing tensions, with armed gangs blockading routes and targeting residents and tourists. There have been no reports of U.S. citizens being specifically targeted. The government is reportedly mobilizing the police and armed forces to address the possibility of severe civil unrest. Frenchie
C'est la triste rançon inévitable de l injustice.Law ? yes, but a law that is so unfair to the locals. It was obvious they would rebel one day.
cooperlola
Agreed, Frenchie. I'm afraid the French government's record of the treatment of their colonial citizens is pretty cr*ppy. You reap what you sow, and all that.
Frenchie
Seconded indeed. It 's sad.I heard a man in Lidl yesterday say " give them independence, they cost us too much, it will become like Zimbabwe . We don't give a damn about them. "Horrible to say, but to some people they are just not French.Too black, you know . [6]
Chancer
I dont condone violence but the general strike which has severely affected all the islanders since Jan 20th had hardly reached the connaissance of many people outside of the isle (both English and French) before the escalation. NormanH
Something that a lot people don't realise is that no only is there a lot of unemployment but the prices of even the basics are way above those in France Métropolitaine. This is partly because of Transport costs, but a lot to do with profiteering by middlemen too.
