Clair
A French friend I met when I was living in the UK ended up working for the Renseignements Généraux on her return to France. She used to say most of her time was spent typing and filing surveillance reports about the reigning party's political opponents, as well as those within the party.Twenty-five years on, nothing has changed: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article6832245.ece The claim about a former minister and "little boys" was one also made by my friend at the time. Pickles
A friend who had been on secondment to Gabon visited us just after his return, parking his Republique Gabonaise-registered (hence with a number plate commencing RG) 4x4 in our parking place. We received some strange looks and comments from neighbours until we pointed out that the Renseignements Généraux would hardly drive around advertising their presence in vehicles carrying plates bearing the letters "RG", unless they were particularly stupid.Am I correct in thinking that they have been merged with the DSG, who IIRC were responsible for such masterful successes as the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior?Pickles
Clair
The Renseignements Généraux (DCRG) merged with the DST (= counter-terrorism) to form the Direction centrale du renseignement intérieur (DCRI) last year.
NormanH
There is no love lost between De Villepin and Sarkozy, and it would be amusing if it weren't shocking to see the misuse of state agencies for personal vendettas but goodness knows what will happen if either the two women in the Parti Socialiste got their hands on power looking at the recent allegations of vote rigging in the party elections! NormanH
And in the background is Sarkozy's plan to abolish the 'juge d'instruction' who is independent of politics and leave in place only the lawyers named by politicians, a serious threat to the 'separation of powers' which is supposed to be one of the 'checks and balances' of democracy..http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juge_d%27instruction#Proposition_de_suppression_du_juge_d.27instruction
