Cat
Near Montpellier, an armed man breaks into the home of university professor, pours petrol on his wife and son, but is overpowered by his victim, who then strangles him.http://www.midilibre.com/articles/2009/10/20/DERNIERE-MINUTE-HERAULT-Pour-proteger-sa-famille-le-professeur-tue-son-agresseur-966130.php5Shortened google English version
NormanH
Just another little incident in our Hérault soap opera.I saw that item in the paper, but didn't post it in case people think I am ramming reality down their throats.
Clair
The immediate assumption is that he did what he had to do to defend himself and his family. Had this happened in the UK, I suspect he would have been accused of using disproportionate force...
5-element
What a horrific ordeal for the family, how can they ever get over something like this, especially the husband, who now has a death on his conscience? Of course he will be absolved (well, we hope!) but how will he be able to forget?
Sunday Driver
Reading the original article, it would seem that the prof leapt upon the intruder and put him in an arm lock around his neck. When the police arrived, they found him in shock and in the same position. Given the potential danger of releasing his grip, he may not have been aware that the guy was actually suffocating whilst he was holding him down until the police got there. Clair
Good for him, it looks like he had the presence of mind to run into the street shouting "he is going to kill them all" before returning to his stranglehold.
It was his wife who alerted the neighbours:"... on a entendu notre voisine hurler dans la rue "il va les tuer, il va les tuer"..." NormanH
It sounds like an example of an attempt at 'Home jacking" which I alerted people to on an earlier thread:http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/1862776/ShowPost.aspxI notice last time there were no replies..Perhaps it shows why I sometimes quote the darker side of life in France, in the rural violence thread for example. woolybanana
Not sure that is the real reason Norman, but we shan't quibble. I guess living in a barrel in Montpelier or wherever, you really must see some life, eh!

Sunday Driver
Perhaps there were no replies to that other thread because the events reported were not particularly exceptional given that we are all now fully aware of the darker side of life in France. On the other hand, an incident involving burning children alive and a have-a-go father killing the burglar with his bare hands is far more interesting..... woolybanana
"Merrily we roll along" ..(Diogenes)
Normie, I would not have thought that living in a barrel is too good for dodgy knees. Anyone got an elderly caravan they could let him have?[6]

It has taught me a valuable lesson, not to hurry my reading.
Gardian
It seems that the intruder was a Gardois (from Uzes). [blink]I liked the bit about what they found in the bloke's backpack - "it's clear that he was equipped not just to rob, but to saucissoner them." Christine Animal
"La victime, condamnée une fois pour des violences aggravées, était dans le collimateur des gendarmes pour plusieurs histoires"And what had they done about him?! He could have killed a whole family.
Pickles
It now turns out that the agressor was a former student of the prof.http://www.midilibre.com/articles/2009/10/21/DERNIERE-MINUTE-Exclusif-Midi-Libre-L-agresseur-du-professeur-de-Juvignac-etait-l-un-de-ses-anciens-eleves-967427.php5RegardsPickles

Patf
He did right - hopefully the legal system will be broadminded.Did you see the letter below which explains the technicalities of a headlock, how to immobilise without going too far and suffocating?
