Gardian
I was despatched this morning by SWMBO to get the stamps for the annual Crimbo card despatch. Although I expected them to be at the usual 70c, I decided to take one of the bigger ones and get it checked out for weight / cost.Shock horror! The lady in La Poste (who was "desole") said that it would be €1.30, because it was over 20gms. "Not nearly as desole as me", I replied.Got back home to check out the remaining 247 cards: fortunately only 5 were of the larger size, but even these aren't much bigger than the stamp that'll go on them. So (although it's probably too late, because you've either bought or sent yours already) watch out for the weight and by implication, the cost.Thought that I'd check out the Royal Mail rates as a matter of interest: 81p for over 20gms, so the UK gets a pretty good deal. But I suppose we knew that anyway - politically impossible to jack up the rates to general european levels, but something that would transform the Royal Mail's profitability.By the way, what's happening with the Mail strike in the UK? cooperlola
I pack mine into a box and post them to a friend who sends them second class from the UK. It's still cheaper than sending them individually from here, even with the cost of the main parcel.
Gardengirl
I took some cards for France with me last week to deliver personally, much cheaper, as we were calling in on a few friends on the way north with their presents.OH bought our stamps in UK yesterday; the cost seemed disproportionate to the cards. I tend to send some ecards these days, too.The mail strike seems to be over as far as I can tell, although I didn't hear any outcome; I might have been in France at the time. The only effect I found while we were in UK was that things arrived very quickly; maybe something to do with Royal Mail bringing in their team of Christmas extras earlier than planned? Cendrillon
"Shame they don't look good on the mantlepiece though."But it is the "green" way to go and the money you would have spent on cards and stamps you could donate to a well deserving charity.
