Panda
The disappearance of the nativity was all over the BBC news yesterday, they reported that schools with a multi-cultural intake did not think the nativity was the right thing to do.On the other hand it was reported today that councils will no longer be translating their documents into 10+ languages as it has been discovered that contrary to local opinion there is no legal requirement for them to do so and it's costs a fortune. Hoddy
I don't understand these reports. In my old school in which 45% of the pupils were from ethnic minority backgrounds, we celebrated everything. Christmas of course and Chinese New Year, Diwali and Eid. We didn't do a Nativity Play though because it was a secondary school and we thought our pupils too old. The school has just gained an "Outstanding" in its latest Ofsted Report.I wonder what the people who report this stuff do to support their local churches and schools to celebrate the nativity ? If they care so much about it that would surely be the best way to ensure its continuity. Hoddy

Frederick
It was a belief that under human rights legislation immigrants should have documents translated into their own language...wrong it now appears but after £100 million has been spent on translation services ......If we asked the local impots office and our Marie to send all the stuff we get from them in English quoting "human rights " how long would he have to wait to get it .......hell freezing over comes to mind !..... Gluestick
Except they are now know, generically as "Gollies" or "Gollys"The older terms fell out of use after Robertson's, the jelly and marmalade and preserves company, who used a "Golly***" label (and if one collected sufficient little paper badges from inside the jar, then one sent away for a rather lovely badge), dropped the symbol as "Racially Offensive".Robertsons changed it to "Golly".Mrs GS has a valuable collection of superb enamelled "Golly" badges.http://my.telegraph.co.uk/david_llewellyn/april07/golliwog.htmhttp://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23389075-details/Golliwogs+seized+in+racism+charges/article.do

Ron Avery
"today I read that in 2009 they intend to indroduce a licence required to chuck a hook into the sea from a beach..."Don't know what you read all that in, was it Old Moores Almanac? It must have been as there has only been a consultative document so far issued 3 days ago on 5 December 2007 by DEFRA in which the possibility of a sea angling license is mentioned.Even the societies who represent sea anglers have not dimissed the idea out of hand because it is part of a consultation document looking to improve coastal facilities and the management of inshore fish stocks. No fees for any licenses are mentioned anywhere in the consultative document which can be read here http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/sea-angling/consultation.pdf so where did you read what the license fees which may not be introduced at all will cost? Ron Avery
http://www.telegraph.co.uk [:D][:D] says it all doesn't it...... and surprise surprise the Torygraph is quoting those brave souls who cut your hedges for free and have your pets killed for nothing those heroes of the countryside, (their description not mine) the Countryside Alliance. But hang on, there no link on the CA web site to the white paper. Could that be because one doesn't exist? The CA actually have a far more accurate story about this than the Torygraph. But how come its a white paper? Doesn't that come after a green paper which follows a public consultation paper? Is this another case of simple country folk or brain dead prats being misled by the british press? It can't be can it? Its in the Telegraph so it must be true, the british papers never lie, make up things or exaggerate do they??[:P]

Who are you referring to? Half hour ago I had a cry because we received a photograph of a 6 yr member of our family dressed in her new "Bride" dress, for her "WINTER PLAY"....No Nativity Play allowed at her school this year, no angel wings allowed this year. Tony F Dordogne
Wog is a term which was extensively used by Brits in the Middle East and originally meant Westernised Oriental Gentleman. It was particularly applied to Anglo-Indians and Arabs, especially the Anglo-Indians who lived in India and were treaed poorly by the Raj. It was not meant as a compliment. It's not about being PC at all - it's about having some sort of respect for other people and it's not a case of modern pc, racial abuse has always been unacceptable. And I declare an interest - my wife's mother and her family came from India and though they had English passports, Jenny and her brother were subjected to being called this name throughout their schooling from the late 1940s until the late 1950s which resulted in all sorts of problems for them, their family and the people who called them wogs.Golliwogs were the Americanised version of the name - sort of like Sambo, jiggaboo or nigger. Now, how about discussing Yids and kikes etc and saying that's ok and has fallen into disuse because of the pc brigade? I went to a predominantly Jewish school in east London so also have an understanding of what it was like before the 'pc brigade' started work - I don't agree with everything they do but racial abuse is always unacceptable and if you've not been subjected to it, you wouldn't understand. Now hopefully you may understand why people who have been get so p****d off at it.
