mint
Caught a programme late last night on Arte. Not quite sure what "slot" the prog belongs to. Seems to be about how the Brits (les Anglais) celebrate Christmas, English regional cuisine and possibly a slice of life across the Channel. The programme was set in Combreegeshire (anyone from there?) and firstly shows a Fruit N Veg shop (called an épicerie on the prog) and about a celery farmer (well past French retirement age) and then the camera went on to a shot of his wife in their house cooking with their granddaughter.See what I mean, about the theme? Just kinda mixed. But, by golly, when I saw them break up a piece of crispy, crunchy celery and bit into it, I pictured myself doing just that, especially when all the celery I have been able to get here has been rather limp and cost an arm and a leg. Then, they showed the wife cooking a lamb dish, making a bouquet garni (same term in both languages), then eating scones with la crème épaisse, called la clotted crème.They made la meent sauce to accompany the lamb dish.It was only when they started carving the roast beef that I began to feel nostalgic. But, they were going to serve it with la sauce brune (doesn't sound anything like as delish as gravy, does it? and anyway brown sauce isn't gravy!)I let all that pass. The celery soup was made with le fromage Steeltonne and went down a treat. When the celery man went to the Fruit N Veg lady and said Good Morning, my dear and that was translated as Bonjour, ma belle, I started smiling, sat back and decided to enjoy it all without worrying about the French eye view of life in Angleterre.Anybody got a house in les Fens who wouldn't mind a swap for one in Charente Maritime?[:D]TV, at its best, can be SUCH an eye opener! woolybanana
Yes S17, it was a jolly good programme I must say. There was a strange sense of belonging which I felt too, that is very unusual for me. And, yes, that celery was yummmy.

(and no we don't have English TV either)
