France tops new survey...

Recommended Posts

Gosh, I wonder how much they paid to find that out. If only they had come and asked some of us here who work in the tourist industry they could have got it for free. I would say that 90% of my guests (of all nationalities including the French) mention how expensive France is.

"Even if you do include flights, France is still the third most expensive country to visit, higher than Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand."

The findings were in contrast to a separate survey of 1,500 people in the UK, also by the site, which showed that most thought that Sweden would be the most expensive holiday destination, with Norway and Switzerland in second and third place. France was ranked just ninth by those who took part in the research.

The "research" by flight comparison website Skyscanner, looks to me like a storey to fit someones commercial interests. Someone who has no clients who drive to France by car/motorcycle. So the head line doesn't quite match the storey

http://www.pr-inside.com/skyscanner-spotlights-real-value-resorts-r1936227.htm gives another perception of the same survey. Despite being involved with news and PR, so I should know where to look, I have been unable so far to find the original source.

Edit - found it now, tucked away on the Skyscanner site: http://www.skyscanner.net/news/articles/2010/06/006513-most-expensive-perception-vs-reality.html

I agree that France is more expensive than most people think, but no survey that ranks Norway outside the top ten (below France, Italy, Spain etc) based on cost of drinks, meals, hotels and car hire deserves to be taken seriously. I go there a couple of times most years so I know what things cost.
