blueshirt
I am an American citizen married to a French citizen. We aremoving to Franceshortly. What are the steps I would need to do to become a French citizen or atleast get an EU passport? If things don't work out in France we would considermoving to another EU country but as far as I know I wont be able to work in aEU country with my American passport (and French Carte de Sejour)Would I have to give up my American citizenship? I heard that it is actuallyhard to give it up but nobody has been able to explain to me how.
PossumGirl
Hi there. First NO you do not lose your American citizenship if you get French citizenship. The only way to lose your American citizenship is pretty much to go in front of a U.S. official and renounce it formally.I got my French citizenship almost 30 years ago, when it was far easier than it is today. If you're still in the U.S, then you should go to your nearest consulate and speak to them. Your husband/wife will have the majority of the burden placed on them from what I understand; actually having to prove HIS citizenship! I seem to remember when friends were going through this, they want copies of birth certificates from the spouses grandparents! It's similar to the U.S., in that so many people are in pretend marriages to get residence/citizenship, that they've just made it harder.Good luck and don't give up!PG
