Gardian
We returned home from dropping our son off at Avignon TGV yesterday afternoon at around 14.30.About 1km from home, serious smoke from the north. Mistral blowing like hell (it's a northerly for those who don't know). Heavily wooded around here. Got back, & the smell of the fire was very obvious. A few sirens. After 30 mins or so, the aircraft appeared: two 'Trackers' making regular low passes over the fire (which we couldn't see from our place), but passing no more than 500' over the house as they turned back for another 'drop' of retardent. So, just to be clear, a fire which justified calling in the aircraft, which was no more than 1-2km from us and blowing our way. After an hour of that, the aircraft went off to refuel / reload with retardent to an airfield 50kms away: back in 40 mins, but after one pass, all seemed OK and they headed off back to Nimes. Read in the Midi Libre this morning that it was just a little fire, which burned up 2 hectares. 30 pompiers at the scene. Those guys are more than worth their 'calendar contribution' at Christmas.
