EDF contracts: is there a minimum.....

The people who sold us our house are being held responsible by EDF for electricity used to now because, according to EDF, they did not send them the readings and their name is still on the contract!

Of course, when it's all sorted out, I intend to pay him for our share of the bills. 

In the meantime, I am wondering whether this might not be a good time for me to change supplier.  I could sort it out with EDF but I would really like to know, before I sign anything, whether there is a minimum time that a contract will run?

Does anybody have any idea?

Please don't bother to answer if you have to look around for information as I wouldn't expect anyone to go to a lot of trouble on my behalf.

I don't really mind signing up with EDF but I have seen a better deal elsewhere and, to coin a phrase, Every Little Helps!
