Russethouse
Just for information I recently did some research on scrap gold prices and then went with a friend to sell her bits and pieces of old jewelery, odd earrings, broken bits etc, she netted over £1000 locally, but could probably have got more through this company http://www.hattongardenmetals.com/ who will deal with people living outside the UK as long as they have a Paypal account or UK Bank account - sort through your jewelry boxes ladies !Look in the FAQ's, if posting from outside the UK you have to contact them first. Frederick
And I bet the tax dodger guy who owned them wore the same scruffy trousers denim jacket and dirty boots for years and rode a bike .....
PaulT
If you are selling gold do make sure that the firm buying it is not ripping you off - some very low prices have been highlighted by various consumer programmes in the UKPaul
Russethouse
Thats true Paul, even walking around the local town we were offered 25% less than we eventually got in one place, however HGM gets good reports and references from Money Saving Expert and they seem pretty fair - believe me I did quite bit of research...... Val_2
They have started to do regular cash for your gold and jewellery here now in France. Every week in the pub pile we get a flyer for some buyer setting up for the day in a hotel, communal foyer or centre commerciale.
pachapapa
Au has a high specific gravity and an alloy to improve the durability, as for example Cu will have a limited contribution to the total weight of the piece. The weight should be expressed in troy ounces and the Au price checked to give the value of the piece; some pieces will be hall marked with the proportion of Au expressed in carats; pure Au is 24 carat but it is rare to find anything higher than 22 parts to 24 parts for anything worn. Most people buying gold work with high profit margins. If you buy Au then buy genuine coins like kruger rands, sovereigns or napoleons or small bars. In the andes I used to buy small gold nuggets for mounting, these were naturally hard due to the Cu content.
