Eurovision

Recommended Posts

I just think it was a naff song. I mean, if we get beaten by a bunch of Russian Grannies (who came second apparently) then there is clearly something wrong but to then be beaten, for a second time by 'Dred'wood then there really is something wrong.

The problem for the UK is this reputation of coming last or nearly last. When we won we had English 'stars' singing and they were international stars as well (Cliff Richard and alike). Now these days if you were a star, lets say Cheryl Cole for instance (I name her as she is fresh in my memory today having read the papers) would you want to sing for the UK, probably not. If you want to find new talent then why not let the winner of 'X' Factor do it?

No the bottom line is nobody wants to have their name linked with Eurovision, it's like throwing yourself under a number six bus career wise.

Best thing we could do is just not bother to turn up on the night. As to watching it, well for me tennis or cricket are two of the most boring sports in the world BUT I would get more entertainment value out of them than watching this Eurovision tosh. For me it was NCIS (has that chap lost weight!) followed by CSI then off to bed.

We should stop funding it or change the rules so that none of the songs are already Europe wide hits.......remember the Allisons ? I don't think we were swamped with radio plays before the contest.....

Who chose Englebert ? He seemed to have been wished upon us.....

You may well be right and I might agree with you but she (just like David Beckham) is as far as the media goes both at home and internationally.

I know that this is pretty sad, but I found myself watching it.  Mrs G had given up.

I didn't watch the songs of course, but the voting.  It's the best bit by far.  I give votes to the 30-ish lovelies (the women, not the blokes) who announce the numbers. [;-)]

Several things struck me:

  • The French voting was the only one done in any other language but English. [:)]
  • Where on earth is Hilversum? It's the only time that place ever comes up (when the Dutch jury votes).
  • Actually, the same applies to Berne.

Complete rubbish of course.

[/quote]I too only watch the voting.  It was noticable that nearly every country gave votes to the Swedish entry.

If you look at the last four winners only last year did an East European country win. Aberjayan(spelling?)  The other 3 were Norway, Germany and Sweden.

When I was a kid 60+ years ago the tuning dial on our wireless(radio) had exotic name of stations like Hilversum and Droitwuch on it.  For many years I laboured under the misconception that Droitwich was somewhere in Germany but much to my surprise I found out it was in Worcestershire[:D]. You live and learn[:$]

Probably one of the most important things to remember is that Eurovision started because the European Broadcasting Union wanted to do "something".... "anything" to test / demonstrate it's capabilities on joined up thinking. I guess that "We" will not pull out because the BBC want to be part of the technological developments, but I guess they don't want to host it as it is too darn expensive. That means they will pick naff songs to make sure they don't win and pick up the tab next year.
