mint
OK, I'm going to describe a problem to you and all thoughts, suggestions, comments, etc will be most welcome.Recently, in our little village of sleepy red roofs, there has come into being a problem that involves this:There is a French family who have now taken it into their heads that it would be good fun to ride around on quad bikes. There is a HUGE one, ridden by one or other parent and also a small one for a child who OH thinks is no more than 4 years old. I think the child might be older but certainly it is no more than 7 tops. The lane outside our house, whilst mostly quiet, is till driven on by, say, 8 to 10 cars a day. It is also a lane walked on by many of the elderly as it lies very conveniently between the church and the cemetery and the old people seem to pay habitual, daily visits to the cemetery. Now what I want to know covers these main points:Do these people need any sort of insurance to ride these quad bikes? If the answer is no, then who pays should someone get hurt or property get damaged? Are they allowed to make the noise and create the fumes that these bikes do?If this was happening in your village, what would you do about it, assuming you want to register some sort of protest? Is there any bit of legislation, paperwork work, that exists somewhere and from which I can quote chapter and verse in the event that I want to make my disapproval formal?I see it as possibly an accident waiting to happen, most likely to the child who, of course, has no idea of the danger. I gauge the speed of the bikes to be a lot faster than, say, my speed in the car as it's the sort of lane that could throw up surprises in the form of dogs, cats, pedestrians, cyclists, etc. When I say "knock this one on the head", I almost wish I could knock the parents' heads together but I only mean "how do I go about solving this problem"? idun
Well judging by that, I think I'd be calling in at the Mairie and asking what the legislation is and explaining that there is a problem.
Debra
I'd have a quiet word with the maire and explain that if he/she doesn't use his/her police powers to stop it you're going to have to start calling the gendarmerie every time they're out on the public road. mint
Thanks a lot, everybody. Come Monday, I shall be taking some action. Thing is the father is a lorry driver so I am sure he would be well aware that they are breaking the law.I am convinced that sooner or later the child will lose control of that thing as it now seems to have the confidence to drive faster and faster.
