idun
I really felt for the Spanghero Brothers last night. Their good name soiled by the horse meat affair. These former french rugby players sold their business a few years ago and now 'their' name is at the centre of this scandal.Last night it was said on french tv that one of the abattoirs on Romania only sold horse meat, and that all the meat that they sent to France was properly labelled. The labels shown on tv. Tonight the staff of Spanghero have said that they believed it to be beef they were sent, in spite of the labelling being correct, however the 'anglais' got the blame as it was an 'anglais' method of coding the meat. The staff at Spanghero are very annoyed, as they knew nothing, even those that had been in the meat trade for years. My thought was that if they were in the meat trade for years, wouldn't they have suspected that the horse meat was not beef????? The colour is different, or at least that is what I remember and maybe the smell too, I would think so. I'm glad that I use a local butcher in whom I have confidence and cook just about everything from scratch myself.
Frederick
There is little doubt the cutters and mincers knew what they were handling ... When they are told they conspired with the owners in a fraud and they just might be eating the results of their work in prison They will explain in great detail how long they have worked on this scam And I imagine disclose the threat or incentive they got to do it and keep quiet about it . Asda UK this morning . Could not help noticing lots of own brand beef lasagne ..Reduced to £2 .

Gardian
Today's Midi Libre headline: "Spanghero KO".Personally, I try as hard as I can not to make any instant judgement - the whole sorry business is as confused as hell.
NormanH
In our Halles there are different butchers for Horsemeat (though he also has the best pork chops) beef and lamb, and Charcutierie, and there is no way you would mix them up. As idun says the colour and texture is different.

idun
It was these factures that they showed on french news a few nights ago. Spanghero saying that these were 'anglais' codes and how were they to know. And then you had a worker the following day saying that he'd been in the meat business for 15 years and he hadn't known that they were dealing with horse. IMO, and it is just my opinion, he should have known his business after all that time, even if he was not in charge.
Frederick
It seem that just for the French workers who handle meat All the paperwork in future will have to have pictures on to show them the difference between a cow and a horse .. Anything to find an excuse to blame their scam on somebody else . They have been caught but have not got the guts to say its a " fair cop guv "

Had a look at the website on the invoice and did a 'whois' on it and it is registered to another trading company in Holland and the email address of the owner is a hotmail account. All sounds a bit dodgy to me.
Chancer
I bet all the Castelnaudry companies that make the tinned cassoulet are just waiting for the raid.Or will this be another Chernobyl?
idun
Also topical this week Chancer, as a roof collapsed at Chernobyl, fortunately not on the reactor. In fact the french are building a new sarocphage to cover the temporary one that was done after that disaster.
