woolybanana
Recently, as a result of ouragan Xynthia a plan has been produced by the powers that be which puts as much as 70% of some communes in a flooding zone, meaning that the prices of land have gone through the floor as they have simply become non-constructibles. What it has done to the value of existing properties remains to be seen. Naturally the doodoo has hit the mur as lots of gens have perdus gros. So, if you are offered anything bon marché on l'ile, think twice or you could have a useless piece of land and your salon in l'eau.http://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-france/2013/08/11/01016-20130811ARTFIG00117-xynthia-la-fronde-des-elus-de-l-ile-de-re-contre-l-etat.php
Benjamin
But why has it taken so long for the authorities to come to this conclusion after the 2009 disaster? Not living there now I haven't heard if anyone has been found to be responsible for not forcibly removing those that subsequently died on the Vendée coast.Another whitewash no doubt. woolybanana
The mayor of one of the communes was on trial but I think it was postponed. I'll try and find out.The lotissments concerned have by and large been razés, leaving a strange collection of windy roads going nowhere.
Pickles
Methinks that WB is trying to put the competition off so that he can make a bid from his ill-gotten savings for the whole of the Ile de Ré at a knock-down price, declare UDI and commence a rule of despotism. The sea went right through the middle in the tempest.Last month I went past an area very near me that I saw and posted on here about at the time of the flood ...and ..where a lot of people died .Although half buried in sand with windows and doors pushed through and with EDF disconnecting the power. I now see that people have drifted back and put some houses into use and the land to park caravans on .I do not know where the power is coming from ........a generator I imagine and may be pressed into use just for the summer holiday. I suspect people have seen the repair works to the river Lay retaining bank and the sea wall and feel it is now safe .They are taking a chance and cant say they have not been warned the area is in danger of inundation . The evidence of it is still all round them ! But .......I have not forgotten the sight of the red crosses painted on house walls to show where the bodies were that had to be removed. You had to view for yourself just how far the sea encroached inland in that low lying part of the Vendee to know how much you are are risk from the sea.I would never have believed it if I had not see it for myself . Its hard to imagine a 8 mtr high wall of water but that's what they got .Anything that is done on Re or the mainland to keep people safe in the future has my vote . If it means some have lost money on land purchase for building now planning refused then .......that's life !
