idun
I have been nagged by a good friend this week and even a cashier in a book shop said something about wearing the little bit of jewellery I have been wearing. Both said that my necklace would get snatched and I would have my earrings torn from my ears.As I was returning to my son´s tonight, after dark, I suppose I took fright. My simple necklace went in my bag and then I took my earrings out too. I have never done such a thing in my life before, but I was travelling from one city to another. I daresay that many of you do not live in cities, but would you be that cautious. I never have been so prudent before and wonder if I really needed to be, are things that bad in France. Patf
I very rarely wear jewellery, but was told by the man in the shop where I had a necklace repaired that there had been an increase in theft of gold and silver. From people and from houses (France). He said the price of gold and silver had increased a lot so it was quite a lucrative business. There have been more burglaries here recently too, mostly holiday homes in isolated locations. Like the UK there's a lot of youth unemployment.
idun
There always was a lot of youth unemployment in France. And nothing usually helped either. There seemed like a window where people were employable, between say 25 and 40 and if not in that catagory, it was very difficult.Yes, gold and silver are at record levels.Look at all those big hotels on the cote have had millions of euros worth of jewellery stolen as well as all the jewellers who are regularly attacked at the moment. And then there is the jeweller who killed the bloke who tried to steal from him.I suppose it would be quite easy to steal from me a´ vieille ´ dame dans la rue. Gardengirl
I've not heard about anything like that locally, apart from a story I heard a few years ago that somebody had had their gold chain snatched. I wear a gold chain and gold rings, bur have never thought twice about wearing then anywhere in the world, and see many more people around here wearing much more bling, including many of my neighbours.
