idun
I gave two useful bits of information for those who cared to take heed, ie France3Rhone Alpes, that cover the region and TV Mont Blanc. And then there is TV Suisse-Romande and the Tribune de Geneve (newspaper) in Geneva. Her home is literally a stones throw from Switzerland and Italy is very close too. Mince, we are adults and make our own choices about how we live. This post is affoler as far as I am concerned. The lady has made life choices, which I for one actually respect, good for her living her life as she sees fit. Not my choices at all, but hers. And living with a man who tends to belt and braces, then there is no way that I would be other than very prudent if going into the wilds. But that is my life choice. And I do not understand why none of you do not understand the gendarmes lack of interest. Is it that I still more in tune with France than most of you, OR are the gendarmes particularly disinterested in the Alpes, that I cannot answer. I just know what I have seen over the years and the things that have happened (and one particular case where there was so serious a crime, that it needed to be on national media, but was not) and how the gendarmes have reacted. And on that I'm done.
Chancer
I am not surprised re the G men, well I am actually, pleasantly surprised that they have actually done anything at all especially near to a holiday weekend.Someone must have had some considerable clout to get them to engage although I wonder just how much they have.Watching an exposé emission last night about the operation that went into chasing a couple of Roms from a site near Arras who had "allegedly" stolen a load of copper, they got the mobile phone companies to list all the cell phones that were within the area of two cells some 30km apart within a certain time frame, they sent up helicopters to study the camp for the vehicles concerened, 60 armed officers were involved in the arrests. The Roms said they didnt know anything about it, anyone in the camp could use their vehicles so they were released without charge.I dread to think of the man hours that went into that fiasco especially as it was all followed by a camera crew who then went on to make a 60 minute program about a non story that could be recounted in less time than it has taken me to write this, still a jolly good time was had by all concerned so thats OK then. Now were I to have been reported missing in the area the person doing so would probably have been sent away with a flea in his ear as I am on the occasions that I have gone in to request their intervention, it is very intimidating having 4 of them simultaneously assaulting me verbally. Yet when it comes to filling in forms rather than actually policing like when all the removeable bits had been nicked from my bike at the swimming pool well two of them were delighted to spend over an hour intervewing me and recording everything in the greatest of detail culminating in saying they doubted there was much they could do (no **** Sherlock!) and that the dossier would be sent to the procureur who would contact me in 3 months with the outcome of the investigation, thankfully he had better things to do. Evianers
This has just been published on The Local, which is read by many in France and Switzerland. Quillan
I had the misfortune to watch them search a murder site near my house, to say a bunch of 5 year olds could have done better would be an understatement. Four turned up, two spent the whole time leaning against a tree smoking while the other two wandered aimlessly prodding the ground with their feet. The whole thing took about 5 minutes. If it were not for the sad fact somebody had died it would have been hilarious. I have to say I don't have much faith in the Gendarmes when it comes to serious crime. The only thing they do seem good at is dishing out fixed penalty fines.
Salty Sam
If I may be permitted to interject before this topic goes way off topic with irrelevant comments! Those who select negative comments about the operation of the Gendarmes should remember one thing, it is a large operation with separate specialist branches covering everything from maritime through to mountain rescue.Unlike UK Search & Rescue, there is no trained network of volunteer teams available to be called upon and just like operations in the UK, the effectiveness of a successful call-out is very much dependant upon the accuracy of the information received in relation to the possible whereabouts or known location of the subject. It is impossible to mount large scale searches based upon hunches or inaccurate information, and if someone is so fiercely independent that they see no reason to inform anyone of their intentions, then it is not the blame of the rescue services that they may appear slow in reacting, for where do they commence a search?Unless you have first hand knowledge of the mountain rescue service, please reserve your negativity and bear in mind those that put their own lives at risk rescuing those that often through ignorance and lack of experience, are willing to put others lives at risk. woolybanana
Oh dear, I am so terribly sorry to hear this. I liked Carol when she was around on the forum. NormanH
I would like to express my sympathy for her loved ones who have suffered a worrying time.I knew her mainly from another local Forum and she always had firm and independent views. One small consolation is that she was doing something she loved at the end. suein56
An amazingly energetic, enthusiastic, intelligent, and above all feisty, woman is how I will remember Carol. Her many achievements are legendary. Her love for her family above all, sharing her exploits with them ... far and wide over the Internet. So sorry she is gone, and too soon.Sue
Gardengirl
I send my sympathy to carol's family and friends; her disappearance must have been a great shock for them, and the finding of her body a great sorrow.
Judith
Sad news indeed, and a big shock for her family, I'm sure. But it is at least, closure, and they can take comfort from the fact that she lived life to the full, and died doing something she loved. The fact that she did not have to suffer a long drawn out old age, unable to be active, which is obviously what she preferred, must be a blessing too. It is surely the way we would all like to go.Our thoughts and prayers are with those left behind to mourn such a feisty lady.
nectarine
How very sad. I'd been hoping that she might survive against the odds, and the length of time she's been missing. Great sympathy to the family, but at least she's found though that will be little comfort.
Quillan
I just had a rummage round the Internet to try and discover exactly what happened i.e. the cause of death etc but cannot find anything. Is there any news of what actually happened and her exact cause of death?[/quote]The body of missing British expat Carol Sheridan was found Wednesday at the foot of a rocky cliff in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, police said."The death seems consistent with a fall from a considerable height," a spokesman told AFP.From "Global Post " Another report I read stated her death was instant ..... Its all very sad and I truly feel for her relatives in their loss . Carol's reports on some of her walks in the region described being on very narrow ledges and wire rope attached to cliff walls to give support When she was reported missing I did wonder if she was on one of those ledges ... A very brave lady doing what she loved ..... writing about it ....and who will be missed by many....
