Gardian
Just a question for you electrical experts. In the thread that I put up the other day ('Never a Dull ....'), I briefly described the underground cable fracture that occurred on our little estate. It appears to have caused a power surge which caused some appliance damage. We were OK, but our neighbour had a big bang from the box that sits between his meter and his fuse box: strong smell of burning, and that was the reason that he was exhorting me to knock off our juice (we still had 70 volts, so dim lighting) because he reckoned that there was a major fire risk (no bang heard in our house, but then the box is down in the garage). Our box seemed OK, so I ignored his advice. We now know that his washing m/c and tumble drier are ******ed and another neighbour's two TV's similarly. There may be damage to other residences secondaires' appliances, but we were totally unaffected. My questions are as follows: - was he right and should I have done as he advised? - he reckons that we may have been OK because we were 50m further away from the problem. Possible? - would the fact that we have an 18kw supply (as opposed to everybody else's 12kw) have anything to do with it? - how come we were getting some small voltage and not just a complete cutoff? Thanks in advance for any info - it would just satisfy my curiosity. Chancer
You were probably on a different phase to those who suffered a surtension. If it was just one phase the every 3rd dwelling/supply would be affected, if two phases then every two out of three. Some of us are just lucky, comes from leading a good wholesome life!! woolybanana
For Bobo's sake don't tell Norman about all these surges and shocks or he will be round your place like a shot with his fingers in the fusebox.Well, it is all the excitement he gets these days apart from the times that his barrel rolls downhill into the river.
