NormanH
Leaving aside the terrible events that are going on the weather has been the worst I can remember since I came to France.Twice as much rain as normal in July for example and ridiculously low temperatures:http://www.midilibre.fr/2014/08/01/le-mois-de-juillet-a-ete-deux-fois-plus-arrose-que-la-normale,1032692.php
woolybanana
How strange you should say this, Norman, I was just thinking that it is a beautiful summer with little rain and temperatures about right for me.
YCCMB
Funny, innit? Just the other day I heard the weather forecaster on the BBC saying that the UK has had one f the longest periods since I don't know when of above average temperatures...8 months. It was also, apparently, the 8th warmest July on record, and the 6th sunniest (since 1929).Since I came to France (another part altogether) on July 10th, it has rained for the whole day only once, and been overcast on only another couple of days. We did have a spectacular evening of thunderstorms but they were good enough to restrict themselves to the night.I guess some parts of Europe are seeing more in the way of global warming than others...maybe even at the expense of others! Who knew it could be so warm and sunny in Glasgow, for example?
HoneySuckleDreams
For once, the weather where I am, has been fantastic. Albeit just over the border in Luxembourg. I walk or take the bus to work and I've been wearing short sleeve shirts since the beginning of June. However.... the family in the Pyrenees have been damp since the start of summer. Rabbie
Here in southern England we have had a very warm if damp year so far. Since December we have had only 3 or 4 nights when there was any frost - the warmest winter I can remember. But we did have a lot of rain - well over half a normal years rainfall by the end of May. Since then we have had some very nice sunny weather even if it means a lot of watering for the garden . So far I would have to rate 2014 as one of the better summers
Cendrillon
During Easter holidays in Charente-Maritime we had excellent weather. June was very good there as well and rather too hot for me towards the end. Back in Surrey it has been hot, hot, hot for weeks! Cooling a little now but still good. We too have had some dramatic thunder storms but mainly during the night.South coast U.K. had hail storms and streets in Hove were covered in ice earlier this week. EuroTrash
I came back earlier this week from a month in mid Wales, where it nearly always rains whatever the season. Barely a spot, and temperatures the whole time like mid Wales rarely sees.Got back to find it sunny here too so assumed it had been the same, but apparently not, the sun arrived at the same time as me and neighbours complaining what a bad summer it's been. Now it's nice here, and raining in mid Wales. Obviously the sun follows me around ;)
nectarine
there's been some exceptionally hot days in June and July but not lasting for long ... a few days of scorching weather and then the storms and rain. Heavy rain last night and damp today and forecast through the weekend ... but still warm. Strange weather - gone are the days when you could reply on June-September to be t-shirt and shorts weather. Chancer
I have had and always do in fact have weather that mirrors the UK but more extreme, when its cold its colder, when its hot, its hotter. This summer has been one of even more extremes than usual and very difficult to do the outside work that I have scheduled, its either too hot or pouring it down.Another thing, and this might be normal its just I have never studied it before, I joined the local gliding club maybe 6 weeks ago and every day look up for the right clouds or to hear the sound of the tow plane and its been very infrequent, at least one 14 day period of no flights and poor gliding conditions when they do get up. Clark Kent II
Why do people have such naïve views about weather? We were all taught all we need to know in third form geography: that the Atlantic seaboard of Europe - from Norway to Portugal - is a maritime climate zone characterised by mild winters, cool summers, rain at all times of the year and unpredictability. The further south you go, the warmer it will be when the sun shines. There are things we know now about the jet stream, and its influence on weather, but as long as the Earth rotates in the direction it does now, and we are stuck on the eastern side of a very large body of water, we shall have unpredictable weather. But it does give us all something to talk about ...

Chancer
I dont have any views about weather, naive or otherwise, its is what it is and it will be what it will be.I Wake up and see what the weather is, start work and its usually changed again, carries on like that all day long.I never read or Watch weather forecasts and I suspect the weather doesnt either, it certainly doesnt obey them! And what a waste of time they are, most of the program is spent telling you what the weather has been like that day and how it is currently [8-)]

A few damaged roofs and many dented cars[:(]Since then, glorious sunshine, not too warm, nice breezes and I have attended innumerable fetes, open air concerts, randos finishing with lunch, visits to all sorts of unusual attractions and life has been one long holiday (holiday at home, as it were) [:D]Everything on my doorstep, even the félibrée, and I feel like a real layabout with house and garden, dog and husband, being heartlessly neglected (but the latter two seem thriving enough)[:D]

mint
I guess that might have been just before the really warm weather then.Well Périgueux is the largish town with the cathedral of St Front. It is meant to be just like the one in St Mark's Square in Venice though I fail to see much ressemblance[;-)]Périgord, OTOH, is just the old name of that area approximating to most of the Dordogne as we know it today.Slightly different pronunciation as well, Teapot.OK, schoolmarm impersonation over and back to the weather. It's actually cloudy today so not much sunshine but still warm. Not bad for walking but I have to go to the shops to buy a few luxuries like food and this evening's concert is indoors in a church so I will be sure to take a jumper [:)]

AnOther
It's been complete sh1te here for weeks, up and down like the proverbial whores draws and shows little sign of easing up, more March April than June/July.It feels like we're getting virtually no Summer at all this year and what a rubbish Autumn last year and illness which pretty well saw Spring down the toilet this entire year is already looking like a write off. mint
"impersonation"?
Oh, Wools, should it have been "impression" then?I'm getting awfully confused by these long words![:-))][:D]I know, the summer of 2014 is dreadful because it's the summer when Old Age arrived for me! Well, for a start, there're these mix-ups of French and English words, then the confusion between various pieces of music, then the varifocals have been ordered, to say nothing about incipient cataracts in both eyes!Norman is proved to be right once again, it's not the nicest of summers.Plus I spoke too soon earlier today about the weather. There is an on-going horrific thunderstorm and the claps of thunder sound like they are just over our roof. Little dog is panting with fear and I am not unsure whether to do to the concert in case she gets really frightened[+o(]
Gardengirl
We've been kept in England due to poor health for a few months, and have had a lovely summer here in SE England, an old-fashioned summer, reminiscent of when I was young and we all played with the melted tar in the street, rolling it into sticky balls and stretching it - then got in trouble for having tar over hands, clothes shoes etc! This last week has been more changeable, with heavy rain at times and thunderstorms - we counted ourselves lucky that we didn't get the hail or floods that other nearby counties had. It's been too hot for me at times, with temperatures at 30C - exactly what we normally return to England to avoid! Today it's 24C, nice and comfortable, cloudy and sunny, very pleasant. mint
Oh, GG, I do so hope the health issues are now resolved.Actually, the weather's been really great for me and even the hot sticky days tend to be broken up by one or two days of heavy rains and everything gets a soaking. Not sure the farmers like it though as the evening of hailstones that I described did lay waste a lot of the maize crops. Strangely enough, the sunflowers which you would think would be less strong, were hardly affected.Don't mind me wittering on about my so-called getting old stuff. I am really looking forward to my new glasses as it's been such a bind, swapping glasses for watching TV and reading and indeed for reading music and cooking, etc. What a faff!Bearing in mind what Cendrillon has said about wearing purple, my new glasses will indeed have purple-coloured frames[:)]Today, thunderstoms which did clear for a couple of hours late morning for attending a social function en plein air. Patf
It's been really sultry here - very warm, with heavy showers, sometimes thundery , in the evenings. Some with hailstones, as in your area Mint. The maize farmers seem to have salvaged their crops though, it was very localised.Vegetation is growing like a jungle, never known a summer like it.Just come back from a week in SE England where it was very sunny and almost as warm as SW France.
